Apparently this is launching tomorrow on Desktop and Mobile.

I'm not getting my hopes up. The current player has been awfully unreliable for a few years now.

Well, it seems that they're finally adding Chromecast support for Android devices, which is long overdue.

HTML5 instead of Flash now too.

I'm hoping it's a big improvement, as it badly needs it.

    Fingers crossed...but it is RTE

Just tried it on the laptop and it's telling me I have to install or allow flash. Do I have to change settings to HTML5?

Thanks. I kinda guessed that since. I had a look on the play store for the phone. The version was released in 2013 and last updated sept 2018. The reviews are diabolical. Just as I remembered it.

I'll give the new one a go and see how it works out. There are times it could come in handy but not in its present form. They need to have taken criticism on board and got their sh1t together.

Bachelor's Walk is on it. Fantastic. I paid someone on Boards before for DVDs ripped from video I think.

It's great that people get a chance to watch the show, I thought it was great.

Some decent box sets of their older stuff on there already - Bachelor's Walk, Love/Hate, A Scare At Bedtime, Naked Camera. If they get Paths To Freedom and Pure Mule up there as well it could be good. I notice they also have a lot of TG4 stuff, a couple of Shortscreen Films, all 6 seasons of Dawson's Creek, and Into The West. If they start adding more classic Irish films and get their hands on a couple of Boxsets of US Dramas and Sitcoms it could be a good streaming service - it seems they're attempting to go for something akin to the BBC iPlayer or ITV Hub anyway, which is a good starting point.

It's a massive improvement over what it's replacing. I hope the mobile apps will be as good.

    to many ads

Tried it last night, sat through 9 ads and didn't get to see a second of actual content. So no better then the old site, but no worse either

Should the app on my smart TV update automatically or is this an entirely new entity? The app on the TV doesn't look any different layout wise and it's being fierce glitchy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,982 ✭✭✭lertsnim

I don't think it has been launched for any smart tv's yet

Used the new Android app yesterday to watch an episode of Taken Down. I was happily surprised that it worked perfectly and no ads to boot, well done RTÉ.

Tried today to watch another episode, it connects to Chromecast but refuses to play anything. Can watch on the phone itself but nothing on Chromecast. Typical RTÉ crap.

In fairness, anything is an improvement on utterly awful, but hopefully they'll do it at least 50% right.

Well it's not great. Be careful with this as I was watching season 2 episode 2 of something. When I came back it had continue watching option, so it played season 3 episode 3 next.

Huge improvement but still a bit buggy. Chromecase does not seem to work with some of the content (i.e. Wild Kids) and don't get me started on the excesive and invasive ads.

I see myself spending more time on this app than on Netflix, if they iron out those details.
