Parking fine in the UK

    Hi all,

I was in the UK recently and picked up a parking fine while I was parked up and waiting in my rental car at an nearby airport hotel. I was parked on the hotel grounds for an hour and a half.

Naively, I presumed since I was sitting in the car I would be okay to park and wait on the hotel grounds.

Since then, I have received a admin fee invoice from my car rental agency seeking payment of £40.

They also sent me a copy of the parking fine notice which was sent to the car rental company. The rental company has also stated that they have provided the parking agency with my driving details.

As per the fine notice which was sent to the rental agency the fine is £60 and if I don’t pay by 14 December it goes up to £100.

This is a lot of money for me and would be greatly needed for the upcoming Xmas season.

The rental company has stated that they will take the £40 in 15 days out of my bank.

For the parking notice fine should I pay the £60 now or should I wait until I receive the parking fine notice in the post from the hotel car park security company?

Or should I hold out and hope that they don’t send me the fine? Or would I be end up paying the higher fee of £100.

My gut feeling is to pay the fine since I did the crime.

Would appreciate everyone opinions or past experiences.

    Thanks !

Wait for the notice in your own name. I wouldn't ever consider paying them.

You will have an absolute defence as Parking Eye must send you a copy of the rental agreement with the notice. They won't send all the required documents under Section 14 of Schedule 4 The Protection of Freedoms Act 2012.

In any event once they realise you are overseas they will drop the matter.

Check to see if it is an official government issued fine or a "fine" issued by a private company. The 1st you have to pay the 2nd is difficult for then to chase through the Irish system. But your real problem is the rental agreement you signed and what that has in relation to tickets.

If you were parked in a hotel car park it is not a 'Parking fine', It is an invoice for services used.

Most parking control companies dress their invoices up to look like a Council fine as they know a lot of people will pay, worried about the consequences from a statutory body such as the Police or Councils.

Thanks for all of your messages.

The fine notice does not seem to be from the local county council. It is from a third party company called ‘Parking Eye’ and they are a member of the British Parking association.

The fine itself looks more like an invoice.

I have gone through the rental agreement. The policy of the rental agency is to provide Parking Eye with my details. My understanding is that the rental agency has discharged their duties in respect of this parking violation and now it is up to Parking Eye to enforce and collect the fine amount of £60/£100 from me.

    Thanks again!

The thing is the rental company will just charge your credit card.

The rental company will not be charging the OP for the speculative invoice. They have already charged him for the admin.

    This won't go anywhere.
