    Quick question........
Friend on mine aged 51 living in council house with her elderly mother. She's been paying the rent but house is in mother's name. She's been living there all of her life. Her mother has dementia and is unwell. My friend is getting a bit worried over what might happen if her mother passes away. Will she be allowed stay in house? Should she contact council at this stage?

Yes she should contact the council. They MAY be willing to add her to the tenancy. If not, then as long ad the mother still lives in the house, they can continue to live there. Once the mother no longer lives there (eg enters ling term care) it has to be retirned to the council.

If the daughter has a housing need herself she will go on the housing list, and potentially may be allocated the house she is currently in.

However if the house is bigger than she needs she may be allocated something more suitable.
