Hey folks, I'm new to all this and ended up buying the box thinking the old satellite cables in the building were still working but it seems they are not as there is no signal, so can't get any stations that way.

I'm trying to figure out how to get IPTV going, I have the IPTV Player on the box itself (p.s: I'm using the high horse backup he has posted thanks for that).

I know how to set up FTP and can assess the box from my PC already. My question is regarding the IPTV Subscription and EPG.

    As I understand it :
1: I need to buy a subscription for IPTV
2: They send me some M3u file which I must save from my PC into the Tiviar box.
3: I then need to set up an EPG to actually show the stations on this file?

Or am I way off - this stuff is completely new?

Sorry You can't get help with that here

I think I'll give it a go myself, I'll try find the time. Most satellite installers install the Ariva 153 combo box, what are the most noticeable differences between that and this? I read a lot of pages of the thread last night and I think someone mentioned it has a 7 day EPG for the Freesat and series link? Can I record an Irish station and watch an Irish station?

I'll need to get someone out to install the satellite separately and then set this box up, would that be a problem for the satellite installer as they won't have a plug and play box to confirm the newly installed satellite works?

Can anyone save me going back over 67 pages and answer these questions? :D

If recording an Irish station you'll be limited to what other Irish stations you can watch as they're on 2 different muxes. There's an "OUT" connection beside the "IN" for Saorview coax. Run a cable from that to the back of your TV and use the saorview tuner on the TV to watch another channel. Hope that makes sense.

Yep that makes perfect sense, cheers.

With regards to other boxes what extra functionality would I get with this over the standard Ferguson Ariva boxes? 7 day UK EPG? Series link?

I've never had a Ferguson box so I don't know. Is it also Enigma 2? If so I'd imagine the Tiviar is pretty similar. If you download THHB's image and flash the box it's as good as plug n play. The only thing you have to do is set it up for your local Saorview mast. Just takes a couple of minutes. Once you get used to the menu, you can tweak other stuff to your liking later.

It has 7 day EPG (FTA satellite and Saorview) and series link .

You can't compare them. The Ferguson has a locked down propriety software. You get what your get.

The Tiviar is is a Linux box, it runs Enigma 2 software which means there is a whole community of developers working on it and creating stuff to run and interact with it. There are plugins available to do many things, series link (it's called autotimers), 7 day EPG (crossepg), automatically organise channels in Freesat layout (Autobouquetmaker), IPTV, media players.

Is it possible to put the bbc iplayer on the box or perhaps the rte player or does linux not support it?

I have thought of getting this box but I think on demand tv is the future and having players integrated across the platform you have in your home would be a great asset.

No, there are no working players at this time as they do not develop and release them for the enigma platform. There have been working players in the past but they regularly get killed by updates as the TV network play a cat and mouse game with piracy.

BBCi and ITVi are included in the default enigma IPTV player. I haven't tried (needed) ITV but BBC is geoblocked just the same as on a PC.

I have the iplayer and others on the humax box and it is a great asset, better than netflix and very user friendly.

I'd love to have a solution like the tiviar but the ability to stream stuff anywhere I am located and be able to download stuff to a mediashare device that could be used wirelessly offline.

I have young kids and often have to do long journeys in the car and it would be great to have tv downloads that they could access without internet in the car and away from home.

I know the iplayer and netflix allow downloads but they expire after a certain time which is a pain, as you can't renew unless connected to the internet.

I see youtube premium allows you to download stuff. I wonder is there an expiry with the content and what is the user experience like?

Well I got my satilite dish installed today as well as my Tiviar box. Jesus it runs so smooth and crystal clear.
I'm going to try and put the Picons on at the weekend thanks to THHB on page 11 on the thread.

Did you set it up yourself?

So I ordered mine last Thursday with WOS, and delivered yesterday.
it is a learning curve all right, as I have no experience with the software on the box.

However, I am getting there with a hugh thanks to all the posters on here.

First impressions are wow, the picture quality is amazing, even on the SD channels.

Still trying to figure out a few things like autobouquet maker, and adding picons. but it will keep me busy over the next few days.

Although I watch my tv via the HDMI lead, one feature that I like is a scart lead,at the back of the box, meaning i can put it through an RF modulator, and transfer the signal around the house. havent tried it yet, but its possible.

In advance, I am sure that I will have lots of questions, but have read and read this entire (excellent) thread many times, so fingers crossed.

The most asked questions on this thread are very relevant to any new user. First, was the saorview transmitter sites.
Having no luck, in finding the Irish Saorview stations, and after many attempts of scrolling locations of irish transmitter sites on the menu, i tried kilkenny, which is many many miles away from my house, and it worked.
so try and try again is the advice.

Audio description is another bug bearer for many, and yip I had it too. following the info posted here i was able to resolve this.

Nice to have the channel name on the front LED display, but as other users mentioned those two big white lights are a discomfort at the moment, but may get used to them. There is an option to change the Station LED display to time.

The local weather updated and downloaded by itself.

    My next hurdle awaits :)

will keep you all posted, but so far really impressed.

There is also an option in the display settings to dim the front display if you find it too bright/distracting.

Gerry how, it does not work on tiviar, unless you have a different way.

This is using openATV, it may not be available on other images. I don't have a Tiviar but on an Formuler F1 with a similar basic alphanumeric display it works.

Was talking to Satworld earlier they charge 20quid to set it up so I'm going to buy it from them myself.

When using Webif to compile a bouquet in OpenATV is there a quick or efficient way to move channels up or down in the bouquet? TIA

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,574 ✭✭✭Gerry Wicklow

    Simply drag and drop

I called by WOS to see the Tivar in action and was told that while the default image supports PIP (Picture in picture) Enigma 2 does not. Has anyone found a working solution to enable this function?

It worked for me with the original remote. I've not used it as I've not mapped the buttons on my Harmony remote

Thanks for that. I'm sure I'd already tried that but was obviously grabbing the channel name in the wrong place.....or perhaps I had a geriatric moment!:D

    Hi,

I am thinking about changing to Eir broadband so that I can watch Eir & BT Sport.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get the channels to clear on the Tiviar box running THHB image and how to do it ?

I do not have an old Sky box / viewing card.

    Thanks in advance

    Well done Gerry,

I was wondering if it were possible to lower the luminance of this light.

    Brilliant.

I've been trying to download the Picons Pack to install.
Now do I download it from my laptop to a USB stick and the plug the USB stick into the box? Any help would be appreciated.

No, read the above carefully, you FTP the picons to the HDD from the laptop. Ifyou have not used FTP before you need to download filezilla and have a play, its free, basically you use the ip address of your tiviar and the passwords root and tempass. It will all become clear.
