The link I posted yesterday is in full screen HD but no point me checking it from a phone at moment. If it's just pushed in I wouldn't be surprised the lunatic taxi driver still reacted like he did.

    Just mentioned on NewsTalk Breakfast.

Paul Williams apparently having a road to Dasmascus moment saying: That taxi driver will probably be getting a visit to An Garda Siochana because you JUST CAN'T DO that!
If a cyclist came up and started pulling my mirror on my car then me and the cyclist are going to have a serious crash. And he won’t have to be worrying about banging into my car a second time, let me tell you that. You have been warned.

I think the only thing that could have justified the taxi drivers actions is that the cyclist had previously attempted to murder him... because anything less than that...

The AGS will love that, a confession and video evidence. Undoubetdly one of our fine judiciary will understand and he will get pittance as a fine.

Newstalk Breakfast Editor: Remember Paul, the last time you had a go at cyclists we had alot of complaints, and you essentially said it was fair game to murder someone over minor property damage.
    Paul: Yes, and...
NB Editor: Well, apparently, that is not good, and frowned upon, so we are going to try a different tact. Use the same annoying high pitch you always use when you want people to side with you and read this
    Paul: Yes boss
    NB Editor: There's a good boy, here's a biscuit.

Andrea and Shane come over and pat him on the head and give him a good rub behind the ears.

You can only ever be right or wrong on the internet. Nothing inbetween. :D

I sort of agree with you.

Only one side of the story so far. Don’t the backs of wing mirrors just pop back on?

Thats what I was thinking, not even sure how a cyclist would do that, it would be easier to properly break the mirror attachment on a drive by.

I wonder will the cyclist come forward, it would be great for the Gardai if they did.

Yep if it looks and smells like BS, it generally is BS. Wouldn't surprise me if nothing happened previously going by the most recent taxi videos. By where the damage is on the mirror it would be more likely that the taxi driver closed passed the cyclist and the cyclist could have stuck his hand out to signal that and this is where it could have happened(who knows). Whatever, this clown should not be allowed drive again

We still don't know what happened before the wing mirror was hit. Maybe the drive cut him off, pulled out in front of him etc...
But hitting someones wing mirror doesnt warrant chasing him down the wrong side of the road and up on a foot path in the middle of a busy city. Just keep driving behind him until he stops and then approach him. If the cyclist was in the wrong then call the Gardai to come and stop him and sort it out.

Wing mirrors are hard to break. Slapping one won't do it, they actually bend forwards as well as backwards. You have to hit it downwards/upwards directly to break it. I'd be willing to bet he slapped it and it was fine. It sets people off though, but the cyclist obviously had a reason to do it.

Is it justified? No, but it's relatively minor in comparison to trying to run someone over.

It's scarcely one side of the story. They're completely condemning the driver's action. Of course they have to quote his bizarre excuse, but the whole tone of the story is one of shock at the driver's behaviour.

Most mirrors pop back on impact, they don't tend to break at the joint, depends on the impact (force, material, angle etc). The plastic covering can pop off quite easily, not all come off easily though. Who can confidently say that it's not possible? Nobody. Some people here saying exactly what will happen or won't happen, but they simply don't know that.

Anyway, that driver should be banned for life. He risked the lives of others (not only the cyclist) just because of a piece of plastic costing 40 euro.

It's not nice to have your property damaged, especially if you are in traffic and the scumbag who damaged your property knows what they have done and they cycle off. Still doesn't even come close to warranting this kind of reaction.

It's impossible to know, but I'm intrigued at how the cyclist would have broken the driver-side mirror? That area of town is short on one-way streets etc where it could have happened. Even right turns are at a premium? I'm just struggling to see how the cyclist would have ended up in that position.

If the cyclist did damage something, the passenger side mirror is so much more "accessible".

His taxi licence should be revoked immediately on foot of that video, followed by his driving licence and a stint in prison after an appearance in court.

Tough luck. Could have killed or injured someone.
Go do an anger management course and then look at giving his licence back.
Surely they cannot take the chance of letting him back out on the road after this.

and the 'Do Gooders' and the 'Always Outraged' activists would make a case of his nationality if he was summonsed and received any jail time ..

That's the junction of Belvedere Place and the NCR. To get onto BP and be facing that direction, you must come from Mountjoy Square Nth. If you were leaving town and heading that direction, there is a split in the traffic for those heading left down BP and right, down Fitzgibbon St.

I've often been on the bike in between two lines of traffic heading in both directions, plenty of driver's side mirrors accessible.

Here is where I'm talking about.

Dublin north quays this morning. Taxi man was't just going to accept me indicating and moving in front of him to get to the left side of the road where the bike lane is - it was previously blocked by buses. He just kept nudging ahead despite me indicating. All in a 24/7 shared bike / bus lane at the Millennium Bridge. He managed to make contact with my bike from behind at low speed. Going to bring the footage to Pearse Street Gardai - I'm just across the way from them.

On the 1st of October at around 17:30 a male cyclist, greyish hair, was close-passed and assaulted by a taxi driver (his details are below) on or around Clonliffe Road. There is a witness trying to get in touch with this cyclist to assist.

    Holy sh*t.

Two nasty incidents above, particularly the ****** hopping out of the white taxi threatening to knock the cyclist's head off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 416 ✭✭uncommon_name

That is absolute madness. I hope both get put behind bars because that is the only place they belong.
I got knocked off my bike by a delivery van about 4 years ago now, got pushed straight in to a bus stop pole. 2 broken fingers and a broken rib. There taxi drivers think they are being funny and just warning people, but in fact they can cause serious damage.
    Idiots!!!!

Well he broke the drivers wing mirror, this explains why he tried to kill him. The taxi driver clearly believes this was a reasonable response.

I presume Conny was being too sarcastic for some.

Perfectly valid reason to try and murder the lad.
