Can anyone explain to me the situation with iPhones and the NFC feature?

Does it exist on the iPhone 8. X, Xs ? If not is there any plan for it to be ever be a feature on future iPhones?

It does exist on iPhone. At first it was restricted to purely Apple Pay, but as time has gone on its expanded a little to certain areas.

So developers can implement it but as far as I’m aware only in select use cases. Another thing is they need to open an app before the scan the tags to activate it.

I did see that they’ve changed it slightly in iOS 12 on the new iPhones (Xs and Max), so you can just tap your phone without having to open the app first.

That’s what I know off the top of my head, so the TL;DR is that they do offer it, but it’s locked down and restricted.

So it's not really available then is it?

Is there anything outside of Apple Pay that uses it?

I wish I could top up my Leap card like android users can. Better still have the leap card in my phone wallet and use it at stations.

AFAIK it's still locked down to read only mode. the new updates in iOS 12 should allow the leap app to open up when near the leap card and be able to read the balance off the card, but the leap card itself requires write access to update the balance.

Leap system was such a bad design, really wish they'd rip it out and replace with something like the oyster (but give it a better name) in London.

I don't find Leap a bad system compared to Oyster but it just needs to change it's top up facilities.

It does work with android phones so it's crazy that Apple haven't cleared this.

Yes my exact reason for starting this thread. Ridiculous that you can’t top up lead cards and android users can.
