Real Madrid getting Courtois for 35mil and a season loaned player...

    WTF!!!!! Now that’s a bargain!!!

He was in the last year of his contract.

Di Marizio saying Darmian likely to stay, due to Valencia injury problems.

If he has to stay past the end of August I will actually feel a bit sorry for Darmian. I could see him doing a decent if not spectacular job at right back and then Val slotting in again when fit in late September or whatever and Darmian being stuck without any prospect of gametime again. If he does an anyway decent job I think he should get more minutes, at least in those games where his lack of pace won't be as big an issue

How do clubs let that happen these days? I can’t get my head around it. They could of gotten 80mil+ for him last season and instead they allow his contract run down and end up having a net spend of circa 50mil to replace him!!!!

The club probably shouldn't have let it get down to that but it was always going to be tough when Courtois has always wanted the move to Madrid as his family lives there. I think he has known for years that's where he would end up so didn't sign a new contract.

Player has contract, refuses new one, no suitable club looks to buy at big fee.

Current club has to use player or pay money out and bench him (pay two wages, pay big fee no money coming in to offset).

Simple really. United have plenty going out of contract soon as well.

Not sure what Chelsea could have done about it TBH unless Real Madrid would've paid 80m for him last year and why would they offer that when they already had a more than decent keeper and knew Courtois would wind down his contract at Chelsea thus showing then to get him cheap this year or free next year?

It's not like Chelsea could flog Courtois to another club willing to pay 80m for him last year as he'd simply refuse to go given his heart seems set on Real Madrid.

“At United we have to sign big players, with experience," Sanchez told Sky Sports. "Barcelona just signed Arturo Vidal, who is a great player and my team mate from Chile”

"He is an example of the type of players we need to sign in order to win trophies and compete at the highest level“

If you read between the lines what he is really saying is “Mourinho needs get more out of the players and make us do more attacking drills in training because that will solve our problems”

    This confuses me

Maguire, Boateng, Zuoma, just more of what we already have. No thanks.

At this stage it's Alderweireld or pretty much no CB for me. PL proven and in the peak of his career.

If it's to be 'no one', I really hope this is the season where (injuries excepted) Jose sticks it out with his two signings, Lindelof and Bailly.

If it's a case that Bailly is going the way of Jones on the injury/reliability front, then go with Lindelof and Smalling, or Lindelof and Rojo. I'm not looking forward to another season of trial and error with the defence. Once they're not injured, pick a pair and go with them and see them through the odd mistake.

Jose is pretty honest in Pressers so we really should know what’s happening tomorrow.. what times he due to face them at?

Well I’m guessing any club with a vital first team player will try and get them on over a 3 year contract consistantly. So Chelsea knew over a year ago that this was most likely to happen. Does every club have these kind of Issues? How many top players have moved like this over the last few years?

This is prob a top 3 player in the world!!

It’s so funny that the press and ABUs loved this honesty when he put it up to SAF and then turned on him when he became a serial winner....

    United related:
    Sanchez to United
De Gea to Madrid only for a fax machine
    Van Persie to United
    Young to United
    Kagawa to United

Go to other clubs and it is not unusual. Lewandowski famously kept on for the final year of his contract as Dortmund felt he was worth more in their team than what Bayern would pay.

Michael ballack was notorious for it free transfer from leverkusen to Munich then same to Chelsea and left Chelsea on a free too

But hey he got great signing on fees

Why wouldn’t a club he is with just match whatever another club is offering?

It's funny that this 'honesty' is selective...

If he's bad mouthing a player..."It's not how he really feels about the player, we know nothing, these pressers mean nothing, look at what Shaw said about him in that interview..."

If he's going to ream Ed and the board though, no doubt Jose's word will be taken as gospel by a few. All of a sudden, the pressers will mean so much.

If a top player is at a club he's happy at them it's mutually beneficial for contract extensions to be signed well before the current contract enters it's final year but if the player isn't happy or is set on moving to X club and X club only (possibly as a result of X club promising him a deal if he runs down his existing contract) then what can the existing club do?

I wouldn't feel too sorry for the club though as the opposite is also true of course. Clubs often decide they don't want to keep a player for whatever reason and won't give him a new contract leaving the player out in the cold looking for a new club when the current contract finishes.

It's not just the very top players who run down contracts in order to move elsewhere on a free or reduced transfer fee. Emre Can just did it moving from Liverpool to Juventus on a free as he'd refused to sign a new contract and ran down his existing one. The Brazilian winger Bernard is about to join Everton on a free as a result of running down his contract with a Russian club.

It's not always about pure cash. Players are young and often want a new experience, sunny climate, grass is greener, better style of football, new manager promises to play them in their preferred position etc etc

How come we can't Alderweireld for cheap then?

Offer Spurs 30m and Martial on a loan.

I’ve a feeling Alderweireld will be done tomorrow

    titan18 wrote: »

Because Levy is a master negotiator and neither Alderweirld or Utd have played their hands very well.

Alderweirld made it clear months ago he wanted to move to Utd, long before the end of last season. That really pi$$ed Levy off so any goodwill he had towards the player was gone.

Utd in turn made it clear (or didn't deny) they wanted Alderweirld but didn't make an early offer to test Levy's resolve. That, combined with the overall lack of signings by Utd and the impending closure of the transfer window has ramped up the pressure on Utd to get the deal done thus enabling Levy to hold out for a kings ransom relative to the £25m buyout clause rumoured to be in Aldetweilds contract if Spurs trigger his one year extension next year which they would have to do or face losing him for £0 this time next year.

IMHO Utd's mistake here was to not have their BATNA lined up and ready to go weeks ago ie they should have made a "best and final" offer to Spurs two weeks ago for Alderweirld (let's assume that would be £45m) and if Spurs turned it down they should then have crossed Alderweirld off their shopping list and moved on to acquire their next best target.

Leaving it all so late in the window opens you up to being proper fcuked by the selling club unless of course you are prepared to stand pat and wait 6 or 12 months extra to get your man as Liverpool did with VVD albeit the reason for the delay in their case was quiet different and many still argue they were well rogered having to pay £75m when they finally did buy him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,846 ✭✭✭✭Liam McPoyle

Liverpool were absolutely Marcellus Wallaced for VVD.

Anyone that says otherwise is a tit.
