I havent had contact with one side of my family for 17 years and feel the need to cut all ties. I want to take my mothers maiden name will i have execute a deed poll to make this happen or can i just get it changed by common usage ?

Some offices - notably banks - are reluctant to accept a change of name unless it is formally evidenced by a deed poll. The passport office is particularly picky; they'll want a deed poll and evidence of usage of the new name.
