Having a car scrapped - possible to reclaim tax?

Mate has a very old golf and it’s panels are beat etc it’s
A banger. Odometer doesn’t display anymore and it’s approx 15 years old.
NCT due and has a broken mirror and god knows what’s else wrong

Could have it NCT and sell based on a NCT to do list but prob not worth hassle.

So def considering having it scrapped

Who does it in the Wicklow / dublin area

I've just reclaimed tax on my previous car a few months ago when it failed its NCT for secondary structure cortidion and it was uneconomic to fix. If there's three months or more tax remaining you can reclaim pro rata for the unexpired period.

Tax discs must be surrendered immediately as refunds are generally calculated from the first of the month following the surrender of the disc. A minimum of three unexpired whole calendar months must be left on the disc when surrendered. Where a vehicle has been scrapped you will need a certificate of destruction issued by an End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Authorised Treatment Facility.
