Could you honestly see City, Chelsea or Liverpool starting the season with Smalling and Jones as first choice CBs?

I dread to think what will happen if De Gea's form dips.

City, Chelsea and Liverpool have average enough CB's starting for them.

Maguire is still better than most of our centre backs apart from bailly imo

True and that's exactly why we need to sign top center backs.

We need better than Maguire, who would only be good enough to be 4th choice if our defence wasn't such a shambles.

    Anyways, more hopeful news..
Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping to be fit enough to attend Manchester United’s Premier League opener against Leicester City in August as he continues his rehabilitation from a life-threatening brain haemorrhage.

On one hand, it's an absurd price.

On the other, it would mean less playing time for Jones.

Both may as well be the same player when they're turned and facing their own goal.

If it's an official brief it sounds like bs.

I mean it serves no value and pisses of Leicester, I don't think he's our real target.

Maguire signing could be a good thing if it means Chris "I defend like I'm on Takeshi's Castle" Smalling is shipped out..

Could be a smokescreen to get Alderweireld to push for a move

    That's a very exciting attack.

Hopefully Andreas has another good game.

Yeah I was actually thinking that (read: desperately hoping that) Briefing the media re Maguire to make it look like we had moved on from Toby to strengthen our negotiating position but really he is still our number 1 target

A little part of me will die if we sign Maguire.

    Hope it’s bs.

If this is true, we have officially settled for mediocrity

If our defence in September is

    Valencia-Bailly-Smalling-Young

    I'll probably cry

Edit: Bailly will pick up his usual injury so it will be:

    Valencia-Jones-Smalling-Young

    Complete rubbish.

He was one of the best lb's in the prem last season.

It's just a pity there wasn't enough other players in the team as hungry and consistent as he was.

    Looking forward to...

"Jose Mourinho feels that N/A is good enough to be United's first choice right winger this season."

I think Maguire could be a great cb.

But... We need an experienced commanding leader. We need someone to organize and command that defence. That might be Maguire in the future but will that be him this season?

We need a great defender now, not in two seasons.

As for the talk we've moved on from Sandro cause Jose considers young good enough... Well... Can we fast forward to next summer when we will be hoping that our new manager can right Jose's wrongs and get us back into the CL?

Feels like we're not even just giving up on the league, this summer window is putting top 4 in serious danger. Weaknesses being ignored.

Said it weeks ago that we would struggle to make top 4 the way things were going.

Stadium is more empty than a friendly at the Aviva.

    Is kick off soon?

Bojan Djordjic looked so promising but had a bizarre career alltogether. Still nice to see him regularly.

10pm. Apparently the tickets were very expensive.

Solid pro, works his arse off, decent defensively... Cuts inside to his right every opportunity, offers feck all width as a result, just contributing to the congested centre area.

Leaves the left sided forward isolated vs the defenders cause he doesnt drag a player with him to create space.

As a left back, without a left foot, it's moronic that he could be first choice left back. Seeing him as good enough is part of the mentality that has seen United do nothing in the league for 5 years and falling behind the top sides in Europe.

Do you think Madrid would like him as their first choice? Munich? Juve? City? Barcelona?

He'd be a fantastic back up player. But first choice? It's players like him being first choice (valencia, smalling, Jones) that means we've no chance of winning the PL or CL.

If so, nice to see fans refusing to pay extortionate prices

How did Bailly not score there?
