As I said though, Sanchez can play on the right, very well in fact

Yet Jose hasn't used him there bar maybe once or twice.
Since he's joined it's not option that has gotten any use and I doubt it will at this stage.

Yea but he is too much of a "star" now to go back to the right

Chelsea officially sack Conte.. don't think Jose will be losing his hair over that decision.

That Maguire transfer story is hopefully not true at all. It would be a real Karel Poborsky/Kleberson type signing- player has a decent tournament and all of a sudden he's flavour of the month.

That's not accounting for the majority of poor teams England actually played against in the world cup as well. While not a bad player he's no major improvement on any of the centre backs at the club already.

Before moving to Arsenal, Sanchez was RW though so could see an imterchanging three of Perisic Lingard and Sanchez behind Lukaku or Sanchez and Perisic either side of Lukaku in a 3

I argued that when we were signing Sanchez, but he has not been used in that way at all - so I don't see Sanchez on the right as being a viable discussion point, I just don't see evidence that Jose is considering him for there.

i somewhat agree - but people have been raving about Maguire since way before the WC, he has been getting plaudits for the last 2 seasons.

What would annoy me more is that he isn't suddenly twice the player he was - so if we consider him a 50million target this summer, why didn't we go for him last summer?

It points to very poor scouting/recruitment/decision making by the club.

"Alderweireld move to United could be back on,the player is still keen on the move.United have now been given some encouragement that a compromise can still be reached, with Alderweireld and his advisers making it clear that they are keen to finalise the transfer in the window that will end for Premier League clubs on Thursday, August 9th."

Maguire looks a far better centre half than Smalling, Jones and Rojo. Is he worth the reported fee ? Probably not but he'd be a good signing for Utd in my opinion.

Based on games I've seen him play for Leicester and England, admittedly not many for them, and games I've seen the other 3 play for Utd. All 3, Smalling in particular, are prone to errors. I think Maguire is an upgrade, maybe not a 40m upgrade, but an upgrade none the less. Could be that he's just had a good World Cup, like Vida from Croatia. I'd prefer Alderweireld anyway.

England's style has helped Maguire no end,
He doesn't cope as well in a flat four with full backs pushed on as there is to much space for him to defend and get dragged into and spun ,
With 3 at the back he is covered , Don't underestimate the difference this makes.

Smalling may as well retire if VAR comes into the PL, he'd be giving away a penalty a half.

Quite possible. Could be one of those players who just had a really good tournament, there's been plenty of them.

He has proven himself somewhat in the PL, but it could be similar to other defenders we have seen look good at bottom half the clubs - Michael Keane being a recent example. Look good when it is in a defensive block, closer to goal with less space. Things are different when they are in a more attacking team, with more space between them and the goal, and more space between them and the midfield.

I read/heard during the week that he thinks he can win the CL at June and have won it at 3 clubs.

That and not wanting to subject himself to the weather in Manchester.

No joke, but every summer when I got muppety about Ronnie "coming home", my mother always laughed and said it would never happen, because she read an article years ago that Ronaldo's mother (who he is apparently very close to) HATED the Manchester weather and vowed never to go back.

Turin weather is just as bad if not worse in winter

Ive been a fan of maguire the last year, he had a solid world cup and was very impressed with his ability to wlak the ball out of defence with the odd few marauding dribbles.. The difference tho is he had 2 other cb to cover him and allow him that bit of freedom, at united he wouldnt. Hes a good defender but not the CB we need at this moment. We need an ex0erienced leader that can tra sition our younger defenders over the nexr 2-3 yrs

God it pains me that Fergie overlooked Zidane having a poor tournament for Poborsky who had a great one. From stories they had all scouted and signed off on Zidane but the poor '96 tournament and reported fee of £5m ruled him out.. to think years later fergie claimed he'd win multiple champions leagues with Zidane and 10 pieces of wood.... what could and should've been

Sure Eric retired in '96 so why would they not have bought him then, he left Bordeaux in '96 to join Juve
