Injured bird - flew into window

    Hi,

6am this morning as I was going off to work a female blackbird flew into sit-room window at a hell of a speed. Made quite a thud. Was breathing very heavily and just sitting still.

I picked her up and she's at home with the missus now in a large box in a room to recover.

BUT.... Roughly 4 hours later now and she can only walk, won't fly. When she left her out onto the grass she just walked toward shelter rather than taking off etc...

So we're guessing maybe damaged wing? Surely after 4 hours she couldn't still be stunned?

We rang vets and they didn't seem bothered. Rang local wildlife sanctuaries and no answer.

So we're at a loss what to do now.

    Location is Laois/Kildare/Carlow area.

Make sure she has water, dip her beak into it a couple of times to encourage her to drink too.
If you hold her carefully, try stretching out the wings to check for damage, if they pull them back in themselves & tuck them up on their backs like normal, they're fine. Though I've yet to see a bird damage wings from hitting a window, usually it's a bit of concussion.
Here i always give them water & put them in a dark place, preferably outside once there's no predators and they're usually ok after a couple of hours. If yours hit the window that hard it could just be stunned or in shock still.

There is a wildlife rescue in Kildare - I think the guys who runs it is named Dan - you could try give them a ring and ask for advice. Any chance it is a fledgling rather than a full adult?

Agree totally. Birds die of shock more than injury. Dark quiet place. I have done this after they have been caught by a cat and they recovered, Just a dark quiet place and leave it.

Vets agreed to see her after herself rang back again, thankfully. Apparently wing looks fine. But badly bruised apparently. So we're back playing the waiting game.
Fairly good news all the same on the wing.

She recovered and herself let her off on her merry way. So hopefully she'll live a long happy life and avoid flying into windows and stuff in future.

Our windows are always fairly dirty so I dunno how she managed to hit ours in the first place :)

That's great news. In general you just have to give them whatever time they need to recover, which can vary greatly depending on how much of an impact they've had with the glass. Sometimes it can be just an hour or so, sometimes they'll need a whole day, it all depends. We used to get birds of all shapes and sizes flying into our patio doors when we lived in Holland, so I've had plenty of experience of this!

Had the same happen before, I guess they are just like us, we walk into things just not paying enough attention! Glad it's recovered. Well done on helping out.
