Car diagnostic tool..

Hey Lads,

After having a few faults with my last few cars, and hating to have lights show up on my dash, I thought it'd make sense to buy a good diagnostic tool that I could use when needed.

In fairness it'll probably never get used but would be handy to be able to diagnose/fix faults on my own cars.

Could you folks recommend a decent scanner or brand of scanner that I could buy? Looking on Amazon and Ebay there is so much choice it's hard to pick one.

Depends on the car but I've been looking at this one for my A6 - https://obdeleven.com/en/

Gets good reviews, and is a fraction of the cost of the full VCDS package. I'm currently using Torque with a Bluetooth adapter.

For the requirements you’ve outlined, just pick one.

They will all be fine for scanning and reading standard faultcodes through an obd2 port.

Picked up a random cheapo scanner about 10 years ago. Still works fine to this day.
Does what it says on the tin really.

I got a cheap 2$ one from China which works great with the torque app on my phone. It picks up the generic codes and wipes them but it won't read all of the cars codes.
My car,04 ford cmax,I got an elm obd adaptor and a specific program on my laptop for codes and other procedures for this car.
Again depends on the car.

I've used elm327 for a long time. Cheap and fine to read/clear codes.

Free apps for your phone will let you comms via bluetooth or wifi
