Started good girls last night. It started so strong but by the end of episode one I was a bit bored and distracted. I'll watch another one and see how it goes.

I thought Looper was one of the biggest hapes of shíte I had the misfortune to watch. The plot was pure bollocks. I watched that and Prometheus in the same weekend. Ranks as one of the worst weekends of my life.

I'm very sorry that you had to go through that. I still haven't seen Looper so hopefully it will be okay!

I thought Looper was great (once you get past JGL's dodgy prosthetics), some really good sci-fi. It's major flaw is the expository narration but it's great to see Willis actually doing some actual acting again.

Yeah, Looper feels like the last time Willis actually bothered to do some acting; the film itself was a great, self-contained thriller - I can't attest if the time travel logic was bulletproof, but honestly it was such a blatant 'elevator pitch' concept, pulled off with enough imagination and panache by Riain Johnson, I wasn't that bothered trying to find holes. It felt like the kind of time travel movie Hitchcock might have approved of, were he into that sort of thing :)

Looper is awesome. It's in that overly ambitious, high concept Chris Nolan tradition. It probably borrows something from every time travel movie of the last 30 years but still feels fresh. If you are a time travel geek, be aware that it is a dark twist on Back to the Future's approach to time travel in which changes to time causes people to disappear, fade away, etc, i.e. it doesn't make sense but that's okay because time travel as seen in movies nearly never does make sense.

I can't think of a greater fools errand of a thought experiment than trying to parse a timetravel plot; if the first-glance holds fast, I leave well alone as otherwise you just get lost in the weeds of loopy, brain melting logic. Even physicists can't properly nail down the 4th dimension, so why would a bunch of scriptwriters fare any better?

The best use of the time-loop in a narrative I've seen in recent years was the Ethan Hawke film 'Predestination', whose loop is the most ostensibly watertight I've come across, resulting in a great series of twists; the worst has to be Speilberg's Minority Report, where the aforementioned first-glance immediately broke down the very story & plot because the whole loop couldn't work.

Sacred Games is an Indian crime series from Anurag Kashyap, director of Gangs of Waseypur, a sprawling 5 hour plus gangster epic clearly influenced by Scorsese and Tarantino (that unfortunately isn’t on Netflix).

He does have a few other films on Netflix that sound suitably dark and have been very well received that I must check out.

I might give Predestination a look in that case - the current high watermark for planning and plotting of a timetravel movie is Primer, for me, but it can be a bloody headscratcher to keep up with towards the very end...

Predestination is excellent, best experienced cold it's one of the few bright spots in recent science fiction cinema. I've seen it in Dealz alongside Automata a lot recently.

Full disclosure I've never seen Primer, but from the reviews and thoughts of others it has always appeared aggressively, scientifically plotted which is a turn off. Predestination worked in a strict time loop model without creating an impenetrable narrative.

On a different note, I wanted something light and brainless to watch last night so threw on Central Intelligence with The Rock and Kevin Hart. It should be a pretty poor film, given that there's only the thinnest sketch of a plot - but the chemistry between Johnson & Hart, and some good comic timing on Johnson's part, make it a lot more enjoyable than might be expected.

Good Girls is like a shit version of Claws, I watched a couple of episodes as it aired but grew tired of the constant whining from the cast and the fact that it was done a dozen times before.

Claws is vastly superior in every way, a genuinely great piece of TV and the writing is excellent. Plus it has Dean Norris as Uncle Daddy, the best character to come along since Omar. It's also the rare treat of being a female-centric show in which they genuinely are powerful and in no way defined by the men in their lives. It's also refreshing for how race is never an issue or even brought up even though the main cast are made up of four different races.

Claws is excellent, not on Netflix but we'll worth watching.

    Uncle Daddy :D

Also enjoyed that, the recent Jumanji reboot was pretty enjoyable too. Hart and the Rock make a good comedy duo.

Been watching Toast of London, it's a bit hit and miss but when it's funny it's very funny. Worth a watch if you like Matt Berry's brand of comedy (IT Crowd/Garth Marenghi)

I read the novel of Sacred Games and enjoyed it. Is the series worth checking out?

I haven't seen it. Think it starts from tomorrow. I can only say that the director is worth checking out.

    Speaking of time-travel.

I'm enjoying 'Travelers' way more than I though I would.

No, it's not about those kind of travelers.

It's a sci-fi series about a group of people who've traveled back to our time from the future. I'm about 6 episodes in and I keep expecting it to get really stupid, but it hasn't yet.

It doesn't go off the rails at all, and if you've liked the first 6 episodes you should enjoy the rest of the first 2 seasons available. I'm a big fan myself, very much another one of those sleeper sci-fi hits Canada exports from time to time.

It's great, and it took me ages to realise Clem Fandango was played by the same guy who plays a pretty big character on Star Trek Discovery.
