Just wondering has anyone passed the NCT with the German plates on?
I know I should but the standard plates back on but that's just me being lazy :P

Just change the pates for the sake of 5 minutes work

Mine have passed twice with no issue. They have the font only, everything else is standard, county, etc and no fake stickers.

Also my reg doesn't have a 0 so can't confirm if that would be an issue.

Also if you have them stuck on rather than screwed on (which I personally hate) the metal plates are a bitch to get off.

If it fails , It'll only be a visual, so take a chance.

If they are easily replaced why risk a 2nd trip to the centre? Unless you live or work near by a centre it'll be at least an hour from your life for the free recheck.

If you have the county name on top and don’t have the dots in the middle of the plate you should be ok. Assuming it’s the correct German size and font

Agree with this. Why are they on, you're not in Germany.

Don't be so vain, its only a number plate ffs.

    Don't tell me, its a Bora/Passat or an A4?

Once you have the county in Irish top centre, dash between the year, county and numbers, no fake stickers and have the blue irl bit, and the correct size font, you'll be ok.

Regulations don't specify what the font is.

You don't see people in Germany putting Irish style number plates on their car. Ridiculous that even today you see people with those fake German stickers on the reg plate. What do drivers of these fake plated vehicles think other people are thinking of them? My god its a German car, the spec must be unbelievable! NOT!

There is no specific font that registration plates need to use, so if it has the German plate font it will pass. If the NCT test deems the font unreadable, then it will fail.

I don't think it's so people think the car is German or anything.

The bold font on the German plates are nicer and German plates are usually pressed metal too usually look nicer.

I had a comparison pic of my missus Golf with plastic plates with Irish font and pressed metal plates with German font and to be fair, the car looked better with the latter.

The said, there's no fake stickers or neverbeen plate surrounds but I do think the German font is nicer, I'm also 99% sure it's an acceptable don't once you don't get the nick out of the "0".

I have standard reg plates on my German car, but they are pressed metal, and definitely look better than plastic ones.

If you spend the money and get a metal Irish plate it'll be the same as a metal German plate. The German font doesn't look too bad on an Irish car but put the stickers and it's just sad.

I'm pretty sure they are the same plate just a different font stamp :pac: it's a preference thing. If I had a non European car I'd go pressed metal with the Irish font but the German font does look nice on a German car, as you say though id be avoiding all the naf stickers etc.

I've also went with yellow patina'd plastic plates with Right Price Cars plate surrounds on my Honda because I want people to know I'm tight.

Pretty sure he didn't ask for anyone opinion on them. Don't know why people on here feel the need to call people sad for number plate styles, while probably driving a Renault Fluence themselves.

Some testers may fail them, chance it or spend 5 minutes putting originals back on.

Just bring the standard irish plates with you. (If you still have them) And a bit of double sided tape.

If you fail, just stick the original plates over the German style with a tiny bit of double sided tape.

Collect your nct cert, and then remove the orignal plates.

I don't have any stickers they are standard pressed metal with the blue strip at the side, name of the county on top and dots. It also has the line through the 0

Not that it matters but obviously I don't think I am in Germany. People have them on their car because they look better than the Irish ones.

I'd chance it Tbh. They're a nightmare to take off with double sided tape. Got tired of them so took mine off and bent the back one

A very subjective and divisive view, it's up to everyone to make their own opinion regarding how they look, be it negative or positive, and not on the biased/rose tinted to force upon others.

But, once the stickers/D euro logo/slash in the 0 are not there and the font is the correct size + county in Irish above, they will pass the NCT

If you use plate holders (a lot of main dealers use them), then its really easy to swap the plates back and forth. The plate holder is fixed to the car and the plate clips into the holder. No screws or sticky stuff on the plate itself. A 10 second job to swap them then.

Because German law specifies exactly what should be on the plate, what font should be used, what size etc. Irish requirements are much more relaxed.

Pre 87 plates were the coolest. No number plate snobbery back then. Here’s a plate from 1977
