Strange safety belt behaviour

    Hi guys,

    Recently bought preowned 2010 Jaguar XK, 45k miles. It seems in good nick but the safety belt retraction is very odd. When the engine is off and / or the safety belt is unbuckled it retracts perfectly, however with engine on and safety belt buckled it stops retracting - if I lean forward to reach for something it will just hang loose afterwards. As soon as I unbuckle it or turn the engine off it will immediately snap back into place correctly.

    Any idea what could be causing that? I had one guy look at it but his only solution was to replace both sets for 1.5k+, he said it must be a mechanical issue but I don’t know why it would be a mechanical issue that only kicks in under certain conditions.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    My guess is that the engine-on stuff is just circumstantial and that you have a twisted belt inside the pillar

    Lots of post online about them sticking in the mechanism. Untwisting the belts inside and the guides seems to be the fix.

    Some cars have seat belt tensioners that detect when someone is sitting there, in the event of an accident they fire with the airbags to secure you. On some newer Audi's you'll feel a faint tug as you drive away. Given your belt is the only thing between you and your windscreen, I'd have it checked out. Small price to pay for what could be your life.
