Hi all.

This build is not for me but the son of a friend, I am out of touch for the last number years on computer advancements so I request your help and knowledge for this build.

He will mostly game on it and the usual surfing and school projects etc.

1. What is your budget? €800 to €1000

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming (first person shooters etc..)

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

5. Do you need a monitor? Yes

5a. If yes, what size do you need. 24" or >

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Keyboard/Mouse/Speakers

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes

8. How can you pay? Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser or Paypal

9. When are you purchasing? next few weeks

10. If you need help building it, where are you based? can handle the build myself.

Prices might change but that's a general build at that price.
Notes:
RAM prices are horrible still, so 16Gb at this price point is not yet possible.
SSD prices keep falling however, so 120-240Gb should be in budget.
GPU: RX 570/580 4Gb should hopefully keep in stock now. You could go Geforce 1060 3Gb but it has less VRAM & can't take advantage of the 75Hz monitor's Freesync.
Sharkoon Skiller is the cheapest keyboard I know of with key rollover; IIRC Mars Gaming Hades is similar.
Mouse is subjective. SteelSeries Rival 310 is 7th on RJN's list.
Corsair HS50 headset has metal frame (important for durability IMHO). If you can find a Kingston HyperX Cloud for sale though, get that instead.

Personally while I preferred the last gen of ryzen to Intel, it looks like Intel are the better option this time around, esp with the savings on RAM speed and not needing overclockable motherboards. While it's small, the 8400 does seem to outperform a 2600 even when the latter is overclocked so should outperform the 1600 quite comfortably.

Otherwise I left everything else the same, bar a change in PSU to a semi modular unit and a little more overhead alwattage, and the case to an MATX model to suit the motherboard.

Also if you want a wireless gaming headset for around €50, I got this a year ago and it has been excellent. Great sound quality, extremely comfortable, and a detachable mic so it's not in your way when not being used (it holds in very sturdy though). Are there options in the budget for an G-Sync Nvidia build? I am informed that he has a head set on his Xbox 1 that is pc compatible.

Cheapest G-sync monitors I've seen are 2nd-hand for €250

It would be over-budget, and GTX 1060 3Gb is weaker than RX 580 4Gb.

Since he has an Xbox One though, I'd suggest sticking to AMD + FreeSync.

and get a monitor that supports FreeSync over Displayport+HDMI, he can enjoy FreeSync on Xbox too (PC: Displayport, Xbox: HDMI).
