Petrol family car

Looking for a bit of advice here,

I'm currently looking to get a 2014/2015 decent sized saloon.
I've been looking at Mondeos, Passats, Octavia. Now the thing is
I don't do a whole lot of mileage, I have about a 50km round trip to work
and wouldn't do a whole lot of driving at the weekend. Should I rule out a diesel
engine given the mileage I do is quite small? There doesn't appear to be a whole lot of petrol engines on the market for the cars I mentioned.

Anyone have any opinions on which of the three above would be the better choice or is there any other car I should look at?

I'm considering heading over to the UK to get the car.......

Any guidance or help is appreciated!

Bigger Passat and Mondeo in petrol form would be less common.

Depending on budget you could look at PHEV
Outlander PHEV from UK will be circa 20k or below. Cheaper if you go to UK. It will do 30-40km on the battery alone so you wont use petrol at all. Tax is cheap as well.

Really if you have the cash you could go full electric. Will save on fuel but will need to up your budget.

Other option is the Pirus, not everyone cup of tea but again your MPG will be better to straight petrol. Other hybrids around, like Honda have hybrids out. No idea if they are good/bad/indifferent.

Also please rule out diesel. Longer term the government will have to hit the diesel market place....maybe not this year but sometime soon and it iwll kill diesel. I own a diesel as well but I know it is coming

We've a passat and a skoda octavia. Both diesel, so can't comment on your fuel choice.

However the skoda is a way more practical family car with lift back boot. Passat is a more refined, quieter drive and has a huge boot, but skoda beats it boot wise every day of the week. The octavia is also tidier and easier park.

Where the passat has the edge is in the back seats. The octavia back seat space is tight enough. Fine for younger kids but Passat definitely needed for teenagers or adults.

Our octavia is the third highest spec, style I think, and it's very well kitted out.

The mondeo also has that very useful lift back boot. Good few friends have them and they are very happy with them.
