Multi-function steering wheel not working

    Hi, recently changed car to an 11 VW Passat Highline 2.0TDi. Noticed this morning that airbag light is on and none of the functions on steering wheel are operating including the horn. I’ve googled and based on that it pointed to an Airbag clockspring module. If this is the case, anyone know what’s involved in fixing/replacing? My mechanic is not a main dealer but very competent, or should I take it to main dealer? Looks like a costly job so any ideas on price of parts/labour etc.?

    The new part needs to be coded after fitting so ask your mechanic if he is familiar with them. It’s a pretty common issue so he may have come across it before.

    The new part needs to be coded after fitting so ask your mechanic if he is familiar with them. It’s a pretty common issue so he may have come across it before.

    Thanks for that. Don’t suppose you’ve an idea of cost? Heading on hols next week so could do without this.

    I've changed one of these in my old Astra years ago.
    Why does such a simple part need to be coded in these days?

    The steering wheel control module and steering angle sensor are both built into the clock spring assembly. So when you install the new part you need to configure it for the specific options that the car has. So for example on a Highline you’d need to code it for the MFSW functionality plus cruise control if the car has it. Also if it’s an estate you’d need to code it for a rear wiper. Etc etc.

    Then when that is all done you need to do the steering angle sensor and steering limit stop adaptation.

    Incidentally, if you are lucky and get a secondhand clock spring from a car with the same options then you may get away without coding.
