how would an irish broadcaster be able to show all the st stephens day games

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,310 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Well, they don’t have to produce them, only show them. (The domestic rights holders Amazon do have to produce them, or at least pay for it. Hence why the FAPL didn’t sell the package first time round).

There seems to be a lot of confusion, not least help by an incorrect article appearing in the Irish Times.  Premier Sports is a UK subsiduary of Eircom Holdings.  Sean O'Rourke has nothing to do with either Setanta or Premier Sports.  He sold the whole lot to Eircom.  In Republic of Ireland; Premier Sports is branded as eir Sports 2 - but only on the EPG - it's on-screen branding remains as Premier Sports.  So these 53 games will be on eir Sport 2 in RoI - not Premier Sports.  In the UK there is a ban on TV broadcast of all live soccer between 2:45pm and 5:15 pm on Saturdays.

Are we 100% sure about this?? I find it hard to believe Eir would be staying so quiet if they are showing 53 PL games over next few years..

Yes, I am a100% sure.  In fact a recent job posting for a Marketing manager for Premier Sports and Freeposts, described the job as being based in Ireland with some travel in the UK.  The address advertised to send your C.V was Heuston Square, Dublin 8. The address of eir Sport!

Presuming you mean Michael O’Rourke rather than Sean O’Rourke (an RTE journalist), that’s not true. Premier Sports was not part of the sale to eircom, who had no interest in the UK business.

Eir press release when acquiring Setanta: no mention of Premier Sports

RTE article three weeks ago, mentioning Premier Sports is run by Michael O’Rourke.

Look, if one article got it wrong, fair enough. All of these articles all stating the same thing? You’ll need to put forward some evidence for your contention please.

Just to say as well, the address thing isn’t enough - the two companies do retain their strong working relationship, or at least have up until now. As one poster a while back said they are effectively run from the same room. But they are separately owned.

Well Premier Sports would need people to subscribe in Ireland to their app (streaming) or add it to the Sky package if these games were to be exclusive to Premier Sports in Ireland.

I just don't see that scenario happening as I believe the rugby from the Pro14 will all be on eir sports. So no huge reason to sign up.

These Saturday games hold very little attraction with the big teams often not involved. Who would want to watch Brighton v Cardiff. So perhaps they will end up on eir sports.

I do fully expect that’s where they’ll end up. Just that I’m not as sure about it as I would have been if these rights had been announced three months ago.

Eir and Premier are definitely separate companies. These PremierSports rights have nothing to do with Eir Sports.

I know this article has nothing to do with the Irish rights but it could be a sign of things to come...

    https://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2018/0705/976637-facebook-agrees-226m-premier-league-deal-report/
Facebook agrees €226m Premier League deal to stream games in Asia.
Facebook will stream live Premier League games in South-east Asia from 2019 after agreeing a three-year €226m deal that breaks yet more ground in how and coverage of elite sports is being consumed.

The Times report that the social media powerhouse will make all 380 games in the English top flight available to watch in in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

Those rights were previously held by held by BeIN, which falls under the Al Jazeera Media Network.

And according to liveonsat.com, the 3pm game will be Huddersfield v Chelsea

It'll be on Sky Sports Premier League btw.

I see that the Midweek Epl Championship games will be available on the Red Button.

Surely Sky could have bidded for the package Amazon won from next year.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,310 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

They could have. Maybe they did. We don’t know. Either way they could only have won one more pack out of the two unsold packages. They were a hard sell from a cost benefit point of view. Pay for the production of twenty games, knowing your prospective subscribers would be seeing a maximum of two of them.

It's from August 2019 that EFL midweek games will be available via red button.

While the new EFL TV rights deal does indeed not start till next season, seemingly the iFollow/Sky red button bit is kicking in this season and was used for Middlesbrough v Sheffield United on Tuesday. Not sure why it kicked in early, but there you go.

Nice one, I'm away on hols, so hadn't noticed, that the red button option for EFL midweek games was up and running. That's a nice bonus, as for my sins, I'm a Leeds United fan.

IMO, Sky/BT didn't buy the FA's bluff about a major online company pushing in a serious bid for all the weekend live fixtures.

They joined forces and came out better off for similar money they spent on the current 16/19 deal.

Any updates on what Premier Sports are going to do with next season's 3pm Saturday games rights for the RoI market?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,310 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

None whatsoever. They have the Amazon package too btw.

Would imagine Eir or Virgin will probably end up with them with Eir favourites in my eyes given Eir and Premier Sports historic ties.

Have Eleven Sport even shown any interest at all of partnering with a traditional TV channel to show these games?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,310 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Eleven Sports don’t have any rights to the Premier League????

Aren't eleven sports and Premier Sports owned by the same guys?

    No, not at all!

Eleven Sports is backed by Andrea Radridzanni, the Italian multimillionaire who owns Leeds United FC.

Premier Sports is controlled by Michael O’Rourke - it’s effectively an offshoot of Setanta Sports.
