Here's the A350 in the Rugby livery with a few adjustments.

    http://www.airline-empires.com/index.php?/gallery/image/16982-aer-lingus-airbus-a350-900/

I think it looks great but possibly a little too extreme for a corporate livery.

I'd love if that became the livery. Really stands out and looks modern. The only bit I haven't decided about yet is the tail.

Agree about the tail, the rugby tail on the IRFU one stands out.

Wasnt aware of that. I have seen an EI video about 2 months ago concerning their new uniform launch next year. The phrase "as art of our brand refresh" stuck in my mind though.

    I really do hope it’s a brand refresh and not a “re-branding”

    My thoughts too.
I have a nostalgic attachment to the current EI livery, I think it has aged very well. I do like the KLM refresh which keeps their blue top. Recent new liveries from Iberia, Alitlia and Lufthanse have been badly received. I too fear the into of 'Euro white' with a green tail to Dublin.

That's what I thought when I watched it, they seemed to be speaking about a much larger brand refresh but also suggested that the new uniform completes this process. The brand was essentially refreshed with the start of the 'Smart Flies' campaign; new advertising style, website, app and a much higher quality approach to company imagery with a new portfolio commissioned.

In fact I believe they considered an entire rebrand before opting to modernise the current one but this was before IAG, the current rate of expansion and new aircraft ordered so with all the change it does feel like a natural time to update the livery.

So does anyone know what aircraft will fly Francie from DUB-NOC-DUB when he’s here

Depending on the timings and assuming the Pope will fly to Dublin with Alitalia (JP2 broke with that and Aer Lingus did all the flying) an A330 could do the Dub-Knock-Dub sector and on to Rome the next day

Doesn't he fly on a chartered Alitalia Airbus for the short hops?

RTE news reported on the radio this morning said he will take an Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Knock

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,016 ✭✭✭Pat Dunne

The last time the Vatican Head of State visited Ireland in 1979. He made the then unprecedented move of flying with Aer Lingus (747-148, EI-ASI, St Patrick), from Rome to Dublin and onward from Shannon to New York, having previously travelled exclusively with Alitalia.

He used the same Irish Helicopters Bell 212 EI-BFH for all internal travels during that visit. Interesting enough it was also adorned with the EI Shamrock and Aer Lingus name.

Id say someone is grasping at straws in Montrose. My bet is on him using a Helo for all internal travel.

Well his visit to Knock airport is confirmed in the official Itinerary, he will go by road from there to Knock village, so looks like he’s landing at the airport which would indicate he will use a plane as opposed to a Helicoptor as was previously done

    Update :-
“Ireland West Airport told the Leitrim Observer they are "both delighted and honoured to confirm that the airport has received official confirmation from the Vatican that Pope Francis will arrive into the airport as part of a historic papal visit to the Marian Shrine at Knock in August."

Pope Francis will arrive into Ireland West Airport on a specially chartered Aer Lingus flight from Dublin on Sunday morning August 26th from Dublin and travel by motorcade the 20-kilometre route along the N17 to Knock shrine. Following his visit to the Shrine he will return to Dublin from Ireland West Airport later that morning.”

So I wonder will they use St. Patrick for the occasion again ?

I'd bet on EI-FNG, St Laurence O'Toole, suitably Irish and a new frame in vastly better shape compared to some of the older frames

    I suspect a B757-200 may be used between Dublin-Knock.

What does he need a widebody for?

You want to fly a head of state in an all Y A320?

Numbers wise you might actually need it, the Pope's crew is 30+ plus the journalists and local clergy could fill up a lot of seats as it wouldn't be possible to do this by road in the time frame available

Both TA flights in the last few days and the wifi would not work.

Crew said wifi works less that 50% of the time now.

The Vatican couldn't take the risk......it could be running three hrs. late or even inexplicably cancelled at short notice.

Would be some waste of an A330

Our own has no issues doing so.

Different kettle of fish when it comes to legroom with our head of state though :)

I’d have thought a big part of it would be flying him on the St. Patrick

It’s probably worth the cost of fuel in publicity and air time when their huge green a330 is showed live on tv as probably a million or two people watch the event

Absolutely. EI would be fools not to milk the opportunity for its media impact.
However lets hop they don't have 'overbooking' issues like happened with the charter flight for the rugby final in Bilbao!!!!

    .......
My memory of "Flight of the Iolar" may be off but I believe that they had a back-up B747 renamed "St.Patrick" in case -ASI had tech issues.

As for the suggestion about EI-FNG, there have been 3 new A333 deliveries since it arrived. All with suitably Irish names. Although Larry O'Toole is the patron saint of Dublin so not a bad choice.

Ninja Edit: looked up the other names on airframes.org! Larry is actually FNH!
FNG = Colmcille (a Prince of Ulster & descendant of Niall of the 9 Hostage)
GAJ = Carthage (abbot of Lismore)
GCF = Aongus (9th century bishop from Talaght)

I think it was a 707 on standby in Rome in case the 747 went tech in ‘79
