Yanee for me. Don't get how people can hear Laurel at all.

Is it an age thing and how your ears change?

As posted already, I'm 100% hearing "Yanny" and I'm not seeking attention.

A colleague in work also heard Yanny.

Maybe you should accept that there might be something in this that you don't understand rather than labeling people.

If you listen to the earth vessel and alex saad versions on the guardian page can you hear it change from one the other as the pitch changes? I can only hear Yanny in the original version but can hear both laurel and yanny in the other versions. It is definitely to do with pitch.

Laurel, very clearly, no matter what way I listen to it I can't hear even a suggestion of anything else.

Ahhhh! When I clicked in to it first it sounded like “yannraul” and then it became very clear it was laurel. I clicked back to the start of the video to see if it was a mistake on the video and it was Laurel from the start the second time! Mind blown!

I hear Laurel predominantly, but I can hear Yanny as well if really I try to.

Have you listened to the versions with the altered pitch?

I heard Laurel. When it was pitch shifted down I heard Yanny. When it was pitch shifted up I heard Laurel again.

Anyone who claims it's saying "Yanny" is just one of those attention-seekers who will say anything to make themselves appear cool and unique.

Like that kid at school who always has some story to tell about how he went skydiving with McGyver at the weekend, conveniently while nobody else was around.

You can make it sound like yanny by adjusting the frequency a bit. So obviously some people do hear that naturally. In fact I heard yanny when a colleague played it across the room, but when he came over it was still laurel to him.

It seems Yanny is pitched at a higher frequency than Laurel - if you can hear higher frequencies (if you're younger, or have little or no hearing frequency loss) you will hear Yanny, otherwise you will hear Laurel.

I hear Laurel, but then I'm old and spent way too many years playing in rock bands :-)

Are you guys instructed to attack anything that references The Guardian then, yeah?

No not instructed per se. Just happens

    Excellent.
I was only thinking the other day I must be going a bit mutt and jeff from spending half my working day in a noisy factory for the past 20 years - but apparently not. All I can hear is yanny :D

You can download Audacity for free and you could mess around with the sound yourself if you know how to download mp3s from YouTube videos. I just reversed the sound and strangely it still sounds like Laurel to me. Here it is. https://vocaroo.com/i/s0BlMwIE21lt

Interesting, I assumed it was the other way around, because I’m 38 and heard yanny.

Can audacity do eq filters? Trying filtering out the bass and some mids, and boost the treble. What do you hear? Any different?

    Who cares?

You came all the way here with that great contribution? The mind boggles.

All I could hear was Yanny, there wasn't the merest hint of Laurel in it whatsoever for me - none.

I listened to all those versions and I hear yanny each time, except for the last 2 highest pitch ones where it's a weird combination of the 2 words, like yanol or something

Add a poll to the thread lads, only way to be sure.

The answer is Yanny by the way.

Unless of course the sound file has a built in randomiser to play variably when accessed, in which case this could be the worlds biggest p1ss take since Trump was elected.
