Rational Windows

Looking for some ideas for painting rational windows. They are in need of some kind of treatment. I did give them a coating of Sadolin stain as reccommended by Rational but this proved to be useless against sun and rain. I have read that stain does not protect wood but am unsure if this is true as it is not what it says on the tin. I could use oil undercoat and finish paint but this would mean stripping all the windows back to the wood, a big job, it also takes away for the reason to have wooden windows, the look. Can anyone reccommend a good finish, most probably a stain that works well with exterior wood in protection from weather and looks good.

You want to paint them a colour.. not bare wood right? I would...

Lightly sand them back to give the wood a key and smooth out any old covering, prime them with a good quality primer like zinsser and then top coat them with a good quality satin wood paint (colourtrend would be my choice).

Only really good one I know is Owatrol Deks Olje D1 finished with Owatrol Deks Olje D2 but thats a whole lot of work after using Sadolin afaik and not cheap.

I did my wooden windows last year, they are a Swedish 3 glaze H sash type and the factory stain was starting to peel on the sun exposed sides of the house.
Sikkens have a very good system, Cetol HLS Plus as the base stain and then Cetol Filter 7 as the top coat.
Its a microporous finish so it won't bubble like a plastic paint. I am very happy with the results I got from mine and its holding up fine, I think its very close to what the original finish was in terms of build height and colour.
