    Yikes!

I live in kilkenny and there's been a bit of bloodbath recently with store closures, both rent and rates are ridiculous. Value stores at the lower end appear to be doing ok though. Appears to be happening even in Dundrum and no doubt the rate/rents are colossal.
Always found that to be a ridiculous shop though, hated it. Snowflake/hipster central- who probably have fcuk all money to spend anyhow.

A lot of shops in Dundrum are coming to the end of their first ten year lease so you'll naturally see a few of them closing up and new shops moving in. Apparently the new owners are being quite aggressive when negotiating rent on the new lease so they don't appear to be worried about finding replacements.

That's very true and it is quite normal for several stores to close and new stores take their place in most shopping centres.
It just the high profile of some of the current stores closing that make it noticeable. But yes, quite normal.

Brexit had nothing to do with maplin. It simply did not keep up with changing retail environment. Way overpriced, a lot of obsolete stock, large retail floors and poor locations.
Almost the same for Toys r us.

Former ceo's will always want to blame external sources, but reality is maplin was old and tired. Radio shack suffered the same fate in usa.

Hamleys just didn't catch the imagination of the Irish consumer and with a massive Smyths store a few minutes up the road in Carrickmines, (paying substantially less rent) it was always on the back foot.

Yes. Everyone will play the brexit game and those rents in hipsterland dundrum are just rediculous will be an interesting 2/3 years now to see who diversifies for e-commerce which is winning

No I don't think Brexit was the reason but maybe a small part as to why they left Ireland. If the store was highly profitable I'm sure they would remain here but as it's not they are shutting up shop. If the store was slightly profitable which then they might have decided it wasnt worth the hassle post brexit.

In other news I hear Smyths is to buy all of the Toys R Us stores in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

It's not Brexit...if that were the case why have a store in Russia etc? They're not in any same economic zone either. No, it's rents and rates that are killing stores here. Someone said a million euro just to rent the unit at Dundrum? That is obscene, especially anytime I've gone in there's hardly a person spending money at a till!
Also if it's Brexit why are the likes of Superdrug and SportsDirect etc expanding here??

It's a huge 3 storey retail unit in what I'd imagine is one of the most expensive shopping centres in the country.

What would a fair rent be in your opinion?

HoF occupies four floors, don't try to pass it off as some cheapskate three-floor slumstore.

Was it not the hamleys unit that people are saying is 1m to rent?

Ah okay. I was skim-reading and thought we had moved on to discussing House of Fraser's impending doom.

A few Mayo lads are about to become largest Toy retailer in Europe. :)

And they still operate the original newsagents / toy shop their parents opened in Claremorris. https://www.facebook.com/smythsnewsagentsclaremorris/

Its not all gloom in retail :)

It depends. Do you like children's toys?

Hamleys (and maybe the Cinema) were the only reasons we ever went to Dundrum.

Is there any reason for anyone with a lidl/tesco nearby to bother going to the store now? Are there any unique or interesting shops left there at all (that are not overpriced clothes shoes shops)?

Even the nice sushi place at the elevators was gone last time I visited.

    “Roll it back”

I like Hollister, shop is too small and annoying though.
Like a look around the others but don't buy much unless in the sales tbh.

Not necessarily. It may reappear as a concession in house of Fraser - esp at Christmas.

    Same primary shareholder.
