Windows XP freezes before login box appears

I'm about to be given someone's laptop to fix.. The problem is, XP loads until the mouse pointer shows but then freezes before the login box shows at all... They've tried safe mode, but it makes no difference, still freezes. Would an XP boot disk do the trick, d'ya think? I'm going to try that when they bring it over on…

boot of the windows xp cd
and ASR (something really close its called)
Automated System Recovery

and do a repair

that should do the trick

registry might be restored to default however..

so alot of applications will need to be reinstalled
