I'll do what suits me, thanks very much. I've zero interest in reactivating my account but Messenger is the only place I have contacts for certain friends and I don't need my account activated to use it. I might only use Messenger once in a blue moon but it's still handy to have. WhatsApp is probably the only social media I use on a semi-regular basis and I check that maybe once every second day. I don't use Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat or any of that palaver.

Thanks but I don't need thanking. :pac:

I always just presumed that was the business model that these tech companies used. We get a technically advanced free platform for social interaction and we pay with the "our data" which informs advertising.
Was this not what people willingly signed up for.
I personally assume nothing I do online is secret and take it from there.

That's what I thought, it was something they opted in to.

Yup, everything that you have done on social media, you have agreed to it.

Yeah but did they say they were selling data to 3rd party companies ?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,740 Mod ✭✭✭✭Boom_Bap

It doesn't matter, you've handed over ownership to them, they can do what they like with it.

If you agree to give me a strawberry, does that mean I have to eat it, or could I give it to someone else.

But it doesn't matter because you have given them ownership.

If I agree to give you a strawberry in order for you to make me some strawberry jam, if you just eat it or give it to someone else, then you have broken the agreement.

They're pure scum if that's the case. Why then did Marko apologise all over the papers in the U.K if they did nothing wrong ?

I'd love to see Facebook shares worthless and FB go permanently offline !

it will be interesting to see what evolves out of social media if it even exists much longer.

but you've made an addendum to the original agreement and inserted a clause. :)

I never suggested it did but I'm not risking they change T&C's and can pretty much do what they like. In other words I don' trust them and also no longer have the desire to be on facebook communicating with strangers on groups that relate to hobbies etc which can end up bickering and political, enough of that crap.

I don't/didn't use it for social purposes, no time for that Bull sh1te at all.

It amuses me when i hear people talking about how much on FB annoys them yet they continue to continue to feed it.

The parts that annoyed me, I no longer use. The parts that benefit me I still use. I wouldn't feel the need to pat myself on the back or put others down over it.

I just downloaded my own facebook data there. Nothing too suprising in there but the list of advertisers with my details was a bit...

    Fashionshe
    Airbnb
    LinkShe
    Spotify
    Fiverr
    Rosewe
    LILIGAL
    ROTITA
    MODLILY
    Airbnb (エアビーアンドビー)
    The White Company
    Rotita
    Modlily
    Emirates

Better yet, don't put your data out there in the first place and don't fall for targeted ads promoting stupid ideas like Trump, brexit and keeping the eight.
I have almost no personal data on my FB account and everything is either on the only me or friends (who are actual friends) setting and am a happy user.

Well facebook won't notice you've gone.
You or the hundreds like you, ye are like the size of a grain of salt in the ocean of facebook users.

I only joined facebook recently myself but I can't see what the problem is. You select who has access to your data, and don't approve anyone you don't trust. If you approve them then it's on you.

    I must be missing something?

You're massively missing something. The Cambridge Analytica scandal has come about because they were able to not only get the data of users who had given them permission to access their data, but also all of those users' contacts/friends. Your data may have been passed onto someone, just because a friend of yours granted access to their own data.

Everyone knows they're handing over massive amounts of data to FB just by signing up. It's who else is getting that data is the issue, and I suspect this is just the tip of the iceberg.

God only knows what they'd do with the assortment of nick cave videos and the onion articles that makes up my facebook profile..

They probably feel sorry for me because the only person that phones me is my ma..

This is the thing, while there's no denying there's been abuse of data, people have given Facebook voluntarily all this access.

All over the place now are articles from 'opinionators' aghast about what data is there on them, and what apps have access to it. There's been some people giving out that there's 10s, if not hundreds, of apps with access that are logged in with Facebook. Yes, because you explicitly gave them permission to do so.

Google is next. Matt Cooper closed his Facebook account on air last week and was shocked yesterday with what Google has on you, especially location history. Dunno why any of this comes as a surprise to him.

Google location history is awesome, I use it all the time. If I didn't want it, I'd just turn it off.
