I sat in a style superb in the showroom and had a highline Passat as a loan when my car was having a service.
I can’t say either rocked my world, although the sport line version of the superb would be my favourite exterior.
I do think that Passat estate is a good looking car especially the light leather and that panoramic roof.

Well pulled the trigger on an A6 S line black edition. Bye bye GTD. Great car, probably never really liked it as much as I should have though.

    Well wear.
    Factory order or in stock?
What spec did you go for?

I think he said it was a 171/2 car he was looking at.

@NonOperational - What was it about the GTD that prevented you from “loving” it? ;)

It's a 172 ex Audi car. New model out this year so getting the 172 took a nice bit off the new price.

190bhp S-tronic S-line with black pack, 20" alloys, full leather electric heated S-Line seats, Bose sound system.

Don't get me wrong, great car, but maybe it kinda was the diesel. I think in a warm hatch like that I almost immediately regretted not getting the GTi. With the A6 I know what I'm getting, a big moderately powered diesel that will cruise well. With the GTD I was always wondering what the amazing chassis would be like with the petrol. Also regretted not getting the DSG. I was very close to a new GTi again, but just felt like a change.

Saw a 181 Golf R in the city centre yesterday evening with an L plate on it! Some car to be learning in, surprised you'd get insurance on someone's policy with that thing.

Smugly enjoyed driving in and out of our estate today... After clearing our driveway. Haldex worked a treat where fwd cars spun out on a single wheel.

3 years had the R and not a bit of fecking snow !

merc stuck in the driveway for 4 days

Got the A6 recently. Pretty damn sweet I must day. Extremely happy. Loads of toys, great Bose sound system and drives well. It actually feels faster than the GTD although it isn't.

The interior fit and finish is definitely a step up on the Golf. The golf was good, but this is very very nice inside. Ride on the 20" alloys isn't bad at all.

Hard to see myself going back to a Golf unless it's a second car for some fun in a few years time.

Hi all. My mk 7 GTi is approaching the 60k km Mark and will be due it's dsg gearbox service. I've been quoted €346 for the job from VW themselves. I thought this was quite expensive. What is your experience of this service? I'm in the Clare/ Limerick region......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

That's not a bad price for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,187 ✭✭✭opinionated3

I had no comparison to reference the price against, but in my head I was thinking in and around €250. I thought 346 was a bit ott, but maybe that's the standard VW pricing. I'm assuming it's not worth DM running any other vw dealership??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,193 ✭✭✭ondafly

think I paid 250 in Keanes for the Mk5 but was also getting a service done foc.

Haven't done it for the Mk7 yet ; looked at the NCT cert for December stating mileage at 39,700km. Current mileage on the car is 40,678km

It is due it's 5th annual service now; because the mileage is so low, there were things they didn't change last time like pollen filters etc. Is there anything at 5 years of age that should be changed regardless of mileage ? All the usual's have been changed previously but I'm thinking the more obscure like the dsg oil or fuel filters etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

It's due it's second brake fluid change at 5 years of age. A 45k service on those only requires an oil change. That said if the car was doing the predicted average of 15k kms per year it would have been due spark plugs and an air filter by now, despite its low mileage if it's never had a full service is probably give it one at this point regardless.

You wouldn't happen to know a handy place to find service information? I've looked for service information in the past but I noticed a lot of stuff was for the US and seemed to be inconsistent with each person.

I'm trying to find out what's needed for each 15,000k service and also when consumables may also need to be replaced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Daveys is a facelift, I think they got rid of the service manuals from the glove box and it's all online for cars that were built from May 17 onwards?

Oil is due every 15k or every 30k if you go long life. Pollen filter is every 24 months, the first brake fluid change is due after 36 months then every 24 months after that. Spark plugs at 60k and engine air filter at 90k. Everything else is based on inspection and the inspection recommendations are based on whether you are on 15k or 30k intervals.

Cheers TFB. Yeah the manual just specifies which interval the car is. No other info unfortunately which is a shame as I gave the manual a good read 2-3 times, nothing juicy. I had a look just there and there's two smaller booklets for the Discover Media in depth.

Forgot about the website actually, I'll throw the VIN in later and see what's there!

Afraid not - the range rover blocks the view :pac: seriously though, its the wife's car. M50 traffic vs train/dart at present takes her the same amount of time, so the car is pretty much parked up now. Its cheap roadtax, fast, all the toys. Can't think of what to replace it with so its staying put for now.

Usually you get a warning in the dash well in advance. Keyless is hard on the battery. 10-12 months battery life I found.

    Hi everyone,

I've been a long time admirer of this thread and I am currently looking to make the step up to a GTI/GTD from my Mk7 1.6 TDI I've been driving around for the past few years! I was looking around the dealerships at "used" facelift models and I haven't seen anything I really like (I'm not a big fan of white on cars which a lot of them seem to be and I would prefer a manual to an auto which again most of them seem to be).

I've built one on the VW website with the spec I'd like (Tech upgrade and adaptive chassis) and I am tempted to pull the trigger....the PCP they're offering online is:

    Recommended Retail Price €41,623.35
    Deposit Percentage % 30
    Deposit - €12,487.01
    Amount Financed - € 29,136.34
    Period - Months 36
    Final Payment - €14,514.00
    Excess Mileage - € 0.06
    Monthly payments of - €437.28
    APR - % 1.9
Total Cost of Credit - €1,269.74

I have an offer of €13k to sell my golf privately which would cover the deposit automatically. My question is - how accurate are these examples they present to you on the website? The monthly payments are absolutely fine and the Final payment amount seems like I would have a sizeable chunk of equity if looking to trade it in in 3 years time (just by looking at carsireland, 2015 ones now are going for around €24/25k).

In addition, is there any sort of haggling/extras that dealers would be willing to throw in when ordering new based on people's experiences here? I'd probably order through Frank Keane Deansgrange if anyone has any experience of ordering from there?

Lastly....what sort of lead team can I expect on a new order?

Thanks in advance for any help!

For a new order and no trade in I would say 2k to 2.5k off the retail price would be the typical discount so factor that in. Think ten to twelve weeks for delivery then.

I think you should try to match the deposit to the expected equity you might have at the end of three years. As such you might be better going with a smaller deposit

Echo what vintagevrs has said, I was offered the 1k deposit contribution + 1k additional discount by a dealer in the last few weeks and that was over the phone. I'm sure if you sat in a dealership ready to place the order you'll be able to get a bit more off, especially if you have no trade in. Worth seeing what the dealer would offer you for your own too.

Would an auto have a better residual value when you come to trade in three years time? If the stock available is mostly auto, is that more popular in the gti and gtd models?

Just a thought. I think in say a 5series specking a manual is a no no, for a gti or gtd I guess it's closer to 50/50?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

The auto is nicer than the manual in them if you are into driving quick.

People used to not like autos in performance cars as they were slow to change gear, a DSG will change quicker than you can shift in a manual.

Definitely drive both before you decide.

Yeah to be fair I haven't driven any of the new autos, I'm a bit prejudiced to when they were clunky changing at low gears etc but I have heard the new ones are very slick. I'll definitely try them both before making the final decision.

Yeah I’d say go with what you prefer. A manual GTI will always have plenty of interest, but i’d echo that the DSG is excellent and you should try it out before deciding. The DSG also costs more to begin with...

The prices on their website / configurator are not to be relied on either. Try and find the “product guide” which is the best guideline on spec and accurate prices.

Hmmm...can't seem to find the product guide for the GTI, they only have the price lists for the standard golfs on the VW website annoyingly.
