She took a stand againt Manchester by the sea and not watching it because Casey Affleck is alleged to be a sleaze around women. That's fair enough but she has gushed over the movie Heather and spoke about how she has watched it over and over. It stars Christian Slater as we all know.

Slater has past convictions for fighting with police, attempting to take a gun on a plane, drunk driving, and violence against his girlfriend, for which he was jailed and sentenced to take part in a domestic abuse program. He has also been charged with third degree sexual abuse after an allegation of assault in the street that was later dropped on the condition that Slater keep out of trouble for six months.

Has LON ever commented on Slaters past? Surely a prominent women's rights campaigner should publicly state what an asshole he is and surely would not rewatch his movies?

This is the main reason she pisses people off and something the "sure who cares, she's a nobody" - it's fundamentally about the background fact that women are considered a "protected class" from trashy, sexist generalisations by "serious" journalistic outlets, while men are not.

As long as that double standard exists, it's naturally going to infuriate people. Nobody likes to feel as if others have rights - or afforded more empathy - that they don't have themselves, simple as that.

To be fair the first lyric was taken out of context, he is critizing the way the woman was being treated and lamenting her place in society. The second lyric looks bad now but he was a man of his time, it's not really fair to judge him through the modern zeitgeist 20 years after he died.

The rape conviction is a massive piece of hypocrisy from O'Neill though, she is firmly in the "listen and believe" camp so she can't really bring up the inconsistencies in the case. It just shows that she throws her beliefs out the window when the convicted is trendy enough.

What gets me frustrated is not so much Louise O'Neill herself (as the world is full of charlatans), but how the leftist Irish media seem to glorify every bit of nonsense this woman espouses and fails to critically evaluate the absurdity of her hypocrisy. When Katie Hopkins appeared on the Late Late Show a while back, there was outrage that RTE would even invite her to Donnybrook. And we have to know the background of actors in our favourite movies now? Because I've no clue about the actors in my favourite movies unless I happen to come across a story about them. Is she supposed to be googling Christian Slaters once a week since Heather's was released?

You know what her views are. They've been analyzed to death. This thread is not about her views but every tiny thing she says. There's some stuff about using her parents I didn't really follow but whatever she said it doesn't sound like it's related to her view of men/women/consent etc

Yeah, I'd have to agree. People aren't necessarily being hypocrites. They might just not know about these people. Christian Slater was someone whose career was only briefly hot in the 90s. I'd say a lot of people don't know much about him. I know I don't! The only thing I know is that he had a briefly successful film career twenty years ago. Ditto Kobe Bryant who I know the square root of fuck all about without googling. I don't know what his claim to fame is. Genuinely. Is it something sporty? So if I was at an event that called for him to be applauded and didn't know of any allegations, I would applaud him, social mores being what they are.
