Movies that you always saw in the video shop but never rented

This is one for the over 30s

I went to video/DVD rental shops a lot growing up. In the pre-internet days it was a major source of entertainment.

Anyway I used to spend 10 or 20 minutes browsing the shelves before making my selection. Thing is I still remember loads of the movies that I never rented out or subsequently saw.

So in this thread post an image of just 1 of those movie covers

This one always facinated me when I was about 13/14 in the video shop.

About 10 years ago I tracked it down on Amazon or Ebay and had to buy it.

Complete and utter $hit but worth every cent.

    Can't link the image.

    Scanners.

Pretty much everything in the horror section.

This one, guess it might have been racy back in the 80s

I remember aged about 10 thinking this looked like the coolest movie ever.

Finally watched it and Cyber Tracker 2 about 15 years later on DVD....absolutely dreadful, but in a sorta 'so bad its good' way.

I remember seeing Withnail And I in a video shop in the late 80's and thinking it sounded intriguing but didn't bite, at that point it was virtually unknown. Did get to watch it years later and became a huge fan.

One video shop I used to go to had an "adult" section with all those and stuff like the Porkys films. They also Betty Blue in there, probably solely because of the title. The staff there were clueless about films, I asked once about renting out Taxi Driver and the lad at the desk had never heard of it.

I can't find a picture of the VHS release but it had the same artwork and I think tagline as the above. I remember reading the blurb on the back and being put off by the mention of prison rape. Still haven't seen it to this day.

    Yeah same actually.

I also remember seeing this one on the shelf all the time from near the end of time visiting my local Blockbuster

The ones in Xtra-vision that used to have that yellow sticker on the front of the box that read "Strictly Over Eighteens". I figured they were the promised land of on-screen boobage.

My pre-adolescent brain wanted to rent this so bad. And why not? It has a gross, rotting, wormy, zombie hand giving you sequel fingers!

    So..... it has a 0% rating on Rottentomatoes.com ...

That Might seem like bad news, but watch Comicbookgirl19 explain why you should love this film, this review convinced me.
    I haven't seen it yet, but it's *cough*downloading*cough*

From the description it sounded like The Karate Kid with guitars.

Magazines at the time made this sound pretty good, but I never got to watch it. Even in a dystopian future, how dangerous can guys on roller skates be? Nobody I knew was remotely dangerous on them in the eighties.

Great thread. I’ve no idea how to do pictures but when I seen the title I thought of the hellraiser cover and married to the mob.

I used to always see this and think it was a curse word :pac:

Find the url of the picture (you will know as it ends in a .jpg) and then paste it in between image tags. Example: insert address here

    Bobs your uncle.:)

Can't find a bigger image than this. Seems like a bit of a horror theme emerging on thread.

Great idea for a thread OP!

One i never got around to renting was 'The Monster Squad'. I thought it'd be like The Lost Boys, maybe a underrated gem.

I watched it in youtube a few years ago, Jesus Christ it was awful.

    File:Monstersquadposter.jpg

The Serpent and the Rainbow was another i never got around to watching.

    File:Serpentandtherainbow.png

I used to get free Movie posters from the local Video Shop. Didn't see most of these films but loved sticking the posters on my bedroom wall.

    Thanks for the nostalgia buzz!

I think it would be racy for any time, featuring as it does, a gay orgy and hardcore porn, all of which but for few short, blink and miss it, cuts survive in the film after it was seized by the FBI.

Oh you should watch it. But but get the DVD with the commentary. The story behind the film is just bizarre.
The number or famous effects artists that cut their teeth on that film like Rick Baker and Dennis Muren is insane and the reason it looks so good.. for a porno that's a loving tribute to the old RKO serials (who would ever do such a thing today?)
It's also famous for controversy, the behind the scenes tale is one of madness, fraud, drugs, paranoia, incompetence, attempted murder and the fact that the FBI seized all it's pornographic content in a raid to build a case that resulted in the legalization of 'oral copulation' in the States. The commentary is just amazing and gives the background to a truly weird making of a movie that would make a great movie in itself.

    Hilarious.

I remember renting this, Underground from the Shantalla Video club in Galway in the mid nineties, one of the very best art house video stores in Ireland at the time, a great and utterly bonkers film about a community of people who sheltered underground during the second world war in Serbia only the guy who was running the shelter didn't tell them the war had ended and they emerged overground in the 1990s during the Bosnian war. :)

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)
