It is very risky to use Adoptable Storage and you should research before using it.

Is the problem, that you don't have enough space on your device for the update file?

Or is the update process reporting an error. If that is the case, it could be a problem with your system partition, not been large enough and additional data partition storage is not going to help.

Have you tried putting the update file on OTG external storage and updating from that?

    The phone only has 16gb.
There is not enough space on my phone to hold all my apps and the update.
I only have a few basic apps and one game.
I really need to use adoptable storage for this reason.
16gb is just too small for to have Android Oreo and a few apps and a game.
Even if I delete the game it'll keep filling up again anyway due to updates for apps and data from apps.
The update is 1.7gb and I only have 1.4gb left on my phone.
I want to use an sd card for adoptable storage.
I'm willing to take the risk.

That article you linked to I've seen before.
    It's too general.
It tells sweet flip all really.
Some class 10 micro sd cards are too slow because I've seen people talk about it on other forums that U3 is better and does provide the correct speed.
If the micro sd card is too slow it can cause failures and that's likely why people have problems using adoptable storage.
They're using too slow a micro sd card.
