Is there any way to make it ask for a password. When I click on Gmail its
brings me straight into my inbox, so anyone can do the same if they pick up my phone.

Just enable security on your phone, you can use password, pin, pattern or on some of the latest ones fingerprint or face scan.

If its on the app then drag across the left hand side of the screen where it says inbox and stuff. Scroll down to settings then click on account and click on 2 step verification this should add another level of security for you

There's apps which allow you to set a password/pattern/pin etc. for any app you have downloaded. Search for app lock on the play store

That shows me the 2 step verification I have set up for my desktop PC but there is nothing to protect my phone Gmail not even a password only my phone lock but I would like a password.

Put a lock on the phone.

Even if you lock the gmail app its trivial to install another mail app that syncs the system account(your gmail).

If you're worried get a fingerprint enabled phone.

I all ready have a phone lock password in use, so there is no 2nd layer of security I can add then?

Not really, anything you add would be window dressing.

HTC devices come with HTC boost, AFAIK, and one feature of that is to add a passcode to protect certain apps.

Most confusing thread going at the moment, in your OP you say anyone can read your gmails if they pick up your phone but then say later you have your phone password protected?

Yeah I didn't explain that too well or maybe it was just another of my senior
    moments:(

Say I had my screen set to not go off for 5 mins and I forgot to take the phone with me when going to the loo, then anyone could pick it up and get straight into my inbox.... not that they would find much interesting in there anyway:D but they would get my email address.

That's what I was thinking off.

Another more simpler option would be to have a shorter screen off time then?

Use something a little less complex and easier to unlock with like a pattern instead of password or pin and set it to lock after 30 secs. This was the very reason for my last upgrade to a OnePlus5 with a fingerprint scanner, instant unlocking with a single thumb press

OP, no one wants to read your emails.
