Princess Cyd, which has shown up on Netflix after its recent festival run, opens with a tragedy, but the film itself largely eschews traditional drama. It is instead deeply focused on its two lead characters - a woman and her teenage niece who were affected by the tragedy 10 years ago, but have long since gotten on with life.

By avoiding drama and being intensely focused on actresses Rebecca Spence & Jessie Pinnick, writer/director Stephen Cone delivers moments of characterisation - both quiet and spoken - that pack a sort of emotional heft and believably you rarely come across. They're very different people, but the friendship that forms between them is handled with the best sort of delicacy. There are two or three scenes that are particularly beautiful moments of insight into the relationship between the two women, as well as young Cyd's romance with a coffee shop worker named Katie. It's rare to see a male director handle female sexuality so elegantly.

It doesn't all work - one moment of off-screen violence feels ill at odds with the understated story elsewhere, and there's one or two scenes in Cyd & Katie's romance that feel a bit cheesy. But for the most part this is a film that is pretty unusually compassionate and respectful towards its characters. It's gentle and modest, sometimes to a fault, but Princess Cyd is an assured piece of work that does some impressive, admirable things within its self-imposed confines.

Watched it last night after reading this review. Excellent film and excellent review.

    The Force

Solid documentary about the deep-rooted problems in Oakland PD. Much of the focus is on the tenure of Chief Sean Whent, the rookies, an experienced captain in the training room and charismatic pastor. OPD is force which has been under the watch of federal authorities for - wait for it - 13 years. At first, Chief Whent appears to be making progress with reform. In 2014, police shootings fall significantly - I think to zero. And Oakland's a positive national story, even international too. Even then, Whent still has a lot on his plate and manpower problems. Anyway, policing being what it is, the wheels to come off pretty quickly. We shift to increased officer involving shootings, street protest, community activism, BLM, etc, whilst not ignoring training scenarios, or disagreement amongst the rookies. With racism, sexual misconduct and a PR mess, it's ultimately the weight of these problems that speak louder than any overt suggestions by the director, in a fairly damning second half. From the comfort of my keyboard I didn't like the police PR woman very much and BLM shouldn't necessarily get a free pass 'there are no good cops', either. That said, community frustration is entirely understandable given the force we are taking about. Ultimately, it does beg the question, who and what can transform a police department?

Just finished lovesick. Dylan is a pain in the arse and his main storyline towards the end of the series very quickly became boring and stale. Saving grace of the last few episodes - Jonesy. I didn't like the whole Oirish thing at the start but the storyline itself was great. Also - how gorgeous is Yasmine Akram!

.. it's basically 'The Soup' or if you've never seen 'The Soup', it that takes the piss out of American TV (mainly reality TV) a là Harry Hill's TV Burp.

    Recommend it for silly laughs!

The Soup was an easy watch. Im going to give this a spin now.

Dylan is a bit one note tbh, but luke character really comes into his own in this series I thought

It's decent, albeit Netflix's attempt to wedge itself into the high-concept, sex & violence sub-genre HBO popularised with Game of Thrones

Watched a few episodes of Glitch today. Think its been mentioned a few times in here. The premise of it sounded like an Australian version of the Returned but beyond the basic idea it's very different. It's not as gripping or atmospheric as The Returned (French version) was but it's decent enough. I was surprised to see Ned Dennehy in it. Thank God they got an actual Irish person to play that character.

    It's a decent watch alright.
Definitely not as gripping, but you still want to see just what is actually going on.

Yeah, I believe so, not confirmed yet, but it's a big hit in Oz so I'd imagine it would get another.

It's the Full Metal Alchemist live action film that was added.

I don't know about that. I haven't seen S2 yet so maybe they're dead, don't tell me if they are, but
Patrick Brammel who plays James is in the US on some show now. Emma Booth, Kate, was also on that awful Once Upon a Time show but that's been cancelled.

There's only 6 eps per series on Glitch though so I'm sure they couldn fit it in.

Cardboard Gangsters - been mentioned here a few times, but definitely worth a watch. Really enjoyed it, great story and the acting was excellent.....apart from one scene where Damo Dempsey appears and doesn't really know what to do :)

Ah, when I saw Bugs I thought it was a 90s "high tech" drama from the BBC.

    This too shall pass.
