Hi i am looking for a device for reading ..
And im thinking of getting a backlit kindle but i was then looking at a tablet and thought maybe that would be handy for netflix and other stuff..
would anyone here considering reading off a tablet or dose it ruin the reading experience as readinhg would be my priority for the device ..

If reading is your priority I would get a kindle. The e-ink display is fantastic and it is easy on your eyes. I find when I read on my phone or tablet that it gets tiring if I do it for one long sitting whereas my kindle is very close to a real book.

I have a kindle paperwhite which is about 4 years old or so. It's still fantastic. There is a cheaper model out now that does not have a backlight, which would be fine I'd say, although the backlight is nice when reading at night.

Thanks ..although the back light will be essential to me

There are but I don't find them very effective. You're still looking at a screen, all they do is change the colour of the light a bit.

If it's for reading you want it then get the kindle. I bought a tablet originally to read on and ended up getting a kindle instead after a few months. The backlight on the kindle itself feels a good bit different to a backlit screen imo.

I have both, but I do all my reading on the Kindle. So much better on the eyes.

If you are going down the road of an ereader check out Kobo ereaders.

Depending what you want to do but if you want to rent books from your local library (5 at a time) then you will need an ereader that can handle books in the epub format.

I believe Kindles can still only read mobi books, unless you convert them with Calibre which may not be possible due to DRM (digital protection).

The above may have changed so I am open to correction??

I have both a tablet and an ereader (ipad mini and kobo).

I dont even know where my kobo is right now. I use it to read in sunlight once a year on holidays. Other than that I read on my ipad all the time.

Do you read much ...do u not think the ipad is hard on the eyes

Another advantage of the Kindle vs a tablet is battery life - the kindle's battery will last weeks rather than days. And i've had my paperwhite close on 4 years as well and no issues whatsoever :). Couldn't be without ...

If you need a tablet, get a tablet. But it won't change the opinion of all of those above (and myself) who have advised you that a Kindle or similar is superior for reading.

It bugs me when someone asks a question while clearly having a specific answer in mind.

Sometimes people just want a little reassurance they are right. So OP would probably like both but can only afford one and hopes that people will tell him one will do they trick !

If you get a decent sized tablet check out this thread for free magazines from your Library (you may need to join a library!!).

Also get the app Borrowbox and you can log in with your library details (again you may need to join a library!!) so that you can download books directly to your tablet!

If free newspapers interests you (also does magazines under the UK option) then check out here, under Barcode/Library card No. enter a 9 digit number starting with 087

    Enjoy!!
