bit of a thaw on here on footpaths and can hear a slight dripping sound but it's starting to snow here again.

Once skies clear temps will plummet.

Had a heavy burst again there but gone back to just the odd flake again. 0.4C. Grass/deck/cars covered - roads and paths are mainly clear.

Signs of the second front coming to life around longford, thought that there would be a stronger pulse in this one, maybe the NW wind will aid this one?
The wind will help, but still the radar echoes are rather light, indeed much of what was shown as the weakest intensity on Met Éireann didn't seem to fall at all over affected areas. Might just be snizzle?

Temps down to -0.4c at Howth.

Some of this stuff should be starting to freeze in the Dublin area.

    Thawing quickly in D20 now

Really bad pic of m50 at sandyford. Just as I sent the drone up it start lashing down with sleet so I couldn't hang around.

The snow that is lying on the paths and grass is very wet. Disappears once you step on it.

Drizzle with some flakes here now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,002 ✭✭✭BLIZZARD7

That strange icy drizzly stuff is falling here now - not causing a thaw though, reminds me a bit of a wetter version of diamond dust.

It does not make much sense given the atmospheric profile right now but i'd take clearing skies at this point. There is clearly a warmer sector somewhere as most cold fronts have a very well defined back edge.

The back edge of this frontal band seems to be freezing drizzle or just drizzle, there's a slightly warmer sector between this front and the leading edge of the invading cold from the northwest, and temperatures may rise to 1-2 C which is going to place the icy roads situation mostly into higher elevations and cold pockets in the inland southeast where the air does not mix as readily. Dublin and Casement could have their warmest temps around 1100h on Tuesday which is a bit unusual (4-6 C). Then it will stay steady or drop slowly and could drop sharply if any wintry showers make it that far inland.

At some point, maybe around 0600h, a moderator might want to change thread title again, this time to heavy snow and hail showers in parts of Connacht, Ulster, north midlands and west Munster. While the east coast snow is about to finish up (some higher locations could still accumulate more) there will be a break between events and the northwestern counties will become our focus for active weather, could have some locally heavy falls of snow and/or hail with the very cold temperatures aloft already moving into Donegal and spreading over most of Ireland by early afternoon.

Freezing drizzle is a good description of what has been falling here for the past 30 minutes. More than ice dust pixies but not quite snizzle.

    Frizzle?

Cavan and Mullingar reported snow at 2 am. They were reporting sleet and rain at 1 am. Good for the rest of the night for those areas with precipitation and showers.

Nice big flakes falling in Wexford now.

Sleety snow still falling in Ashbourne, not sure when it changed, the computer's been doing silly things, so I've been sorting it out rather than lamp post watching.

Still very pretty though, and more than we've seen here for some time. Went outside to take these, and it's feeling a good bit cooler out there now, but that may be deception, given that it's above freezing by the look of it.

The hourly synop lying snow reports from Dublin Airport and Casement are interesting and very different. First lying snow was reported in the midnight reports at Casement and the 1 am report at Dublin Airport.

Casement has been reporting 3 cm of even dry snow covering all the ground up to 3 am (down to 2 cm at 4 am) whereas Dublin Airport only got to 1 cm of wet snow covering less than half of the ground (down to <5 cm in the 3 and 4 am reports). A big difference despite only 11 nautical miles between them.

EDIT. In the 5 am reports, no lying snow reported at Dublin Airport but still 2 cm of now wet snow covering all of the ground at Casement.

    Small warm sector.

Coupled with the hint of an onshore wind at the surface.

    Ah well. That's the margins.

If you look closely there's a marked intensification in the radar along south Dublin.

Just getting light seconds from that here on the northside.

Anyhow some snow showers in to primarily the northwest today and other places later.

Friday looking cold - more sleet and snow showers in to the northwest.

Potentially the weekend looking cold and positive for some snow.

    Long way off though.

Had been hoping to wake up even to a slight dusting after the showers started late last night but no such joy in bray. A bitterly cold morning though
