Was driving home from letterkenny and the oil light started flahing and them stayed on. I pulled over, and the car cut out and won't start. Engine is turning when I try start it but it's like as if it's dead or something, would it need a new engine?

Is there oil in the engine? , pull dipstick and check.
No oil probably means new engine time.

what is colour of oil like?

how noisy did it get?( light metal sound against each other or a load of spanners in a metal tin).
will it crank, have you tested alternater and battery?

    before you buy an engine,
    TROUBLESHOOT.
check fuses, check oil(how clean or dirty it is and level), check hoses for breakages.

Oil looks clean, it made a sort of rattling noise then cut out

check fuses under bonnet? information on fuses should be on or under the fuse cover.

any lights on the dash when you try to start it?

    test alternater, check hoses.

It's not battery or alternator or fuses, it's something in the engine, could anyine give me light as to what part in the engine it might be

If its oil pressure related which it appears to be you need to check the oil pickup in the sump, the design of them in the ZZ engine family isn't great, they can block up and starve the engine of oil. I'd start with checking that pickup.

Yes a retired mechanic told me that

I've heard of a couple of cases with the 1.4vvti of the oil pump breaking up. Also chain slippage, although very rare, isn't unheard of.

Would chain slippage mean engine is ****ed? The oil light was flickering on and off so like as if the engine was only getting a bit of oil

Depends on whether it just slipped enough to cause the valves to meet the pistons - you could be lucky and it may have just slipped enough to put the timing out enough to stop the engine.

How long was the oil light flashing for?trouble with oil lights is they start flashing qhen things are already gone to far in most cases.any clanking when turning it over?if its not starting chances are something has broken causing low compression.it really needs to be inspected thoroughly.its impossible to answer your question otherwise im afraid.

Timing chain could have broken altogether - have seen it happen on a few of the 1.6 engines and they would be the same. Lack of oil - either because of low oil level or starvation - seems to be a common cause.
As said when the oil light comes on it appears the damage may have already been done .

Oil light goes on on them engines when oil level is already extremely low.

I'm afraid it's time for serious repair or replacement, both quite expensive.

    To give another perspective!
1.3vvti Yaris, oil pressure light on for 50 miles. Had the gauze cleaned out as it was blocked.
It has done 8000 miles since so you can be lucky.
It will be interesting to see how long it lasts.

My sister had an 03 Corolla and the exact same thing happened hers. When it lost oil pressure, one of the cams seized and broke in half.
I put a new engine into it.

They need fresh oil, after re reading the thread I'd say the engine is goosed!!
