So sorry to hear that there will be a break with running for a few weeks. Tough to take in the first few days but you will run again C. Your own persistence with sourcing the issue means that damage is limited at least. That is good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭Younganne

When i was reading your post I was thinking it sounds just like what i was/am going through, however you got a worse diagnosis that me, although i was fearful of a herniated disc.

At least you have it identified it now and can began the rehab and be back here as soon as practical. Mind yourself, and follow the advise given by the professionals.

You are not broken, just bruised and bruises heal!!;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,789 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

Tough one, C. Been there too - out for 10 weeks from Nov 2013 with same problem. For me, the rehab consisted of rest, zero running, a few exercises that I didn't do, and have forgotten anyway. The main thing was to just wait for it to heal and not aggravate it. Did you get an MRI? Best way to be absolutely sure of the diagnosis.

All is not lost. You're 2 years younger than I was at the time and look at me now! :pac:

But mostly, sympathy. Hang in there.

This log was supposed to chronicle my road to a sub 3 but it's turned into drama after drama, I'm no closer to that goal, indeed I've probably never been further away and this morning I'm questioning whether I've the motivation to continue. Last Year was a disaster running wise and this year has gotten off to a terrible start.

Feels like the straw that broke the camels back (no pun intended)!

    TbrokenL

Sorry to hear your news C and I know exactly how you feel and how frustrated you are but you will be back - you are too stubborn not to if nothing else. That Sub 3 will come to you - the whole forum will go on the p*ss for a week when it happens :D:D

But in the meantime focus on getting over the injury and use the off time to get the weight down and do whatever other S&C work you can do.

Don't start scoffing all the pies and feeling sorry for yourself (speaking from the experience of what I was doing!) otherwise the comeback will be even tougher.

+1 to this. Really disappointed for you C, you can't seem to be able to catch a break. Delighted to hear you'll be doing less travelling this year, that's gotta be tough on the body.

Chin up and motor on, you're a determined lemon, you'll get there in the end :)

Sorry to read that tbl, you certainly have had more than your fair share of bad beats recently. Stay positive, take it easy and the best of luck with your recovery.

Your to thick & stubborn not to get back C. I went from 5 months off the road with PF to 8 months off the road with a bad knee operation to a further 3-4 months off the road with a torn labrum in my hip which I still have but can maintain. Injuries are part of this running game and they suck big time but they make us stronger and more determined I think to come back better.

Thought of jacking it in crossed my mind loads but I love runnng & having ran with you plenty I know you love it to if not more than me. Plus if I run sub 3 and you never do you’ll be kicking yourself for evermore!!! Chin up and plough on, you’ll get back at it.

Hehehe, I just thought you were sub 3 already.

Btw, my previous post might sound a bit harsh or cruel but I didn't intend it that way. Short term now will be about recuperation and patience. (This is for TBL, yeah?)

Don't be making any massive plans. Bit by bit. Hopefully in a few months time you'll be back in decent shape.

Good 20 mins of sub 3 yet!!! No offence taken on my part, you might pace me to sub 3 in Cologne in October, heard you mention it as a possibility for you this year?

5,000 Euro is the going rate I'm told for a sub 3 private pacing gig. Hotel and train costs thrown in.

    I'll think about it.

Tuesday: 1:1 S&C session. Got a back, glute and core strength and stretching program. Some of the core exercises looked fairly innocuous but they were tough to do and master.

Was doing the exercises at home and on one of them I'm kneeling on all fours and he said my back should be as straight as possible "like a coffee table". Mrs TbL was watching some reality TV program, Snowmen of the Sahara, or some crap like that and I asked her, "do I look like a coffee table?". "No, you look fcukin stupid!", not much empathy in my house :)

    Wed: 1:1 S&C session

Weather was very bad so I hit the treadmill in the gym for a walk. Got about 14 mins done at 6.5kph and I decided to increase the pace to 7kph. Bad idea almost immediately I started getting stabbing sciatica pains in the arse and down the right leg. Stopped and did 400 metres acqua walking in the shallow pool.

Was pissed off that the walking set it off but I need to be careful that I don't overload it. Determination and stupidity are close bedfellows when it comes to rehab for me!

    Thur: 1:1 S&C session

He was pissed off that my interpretation of taking it very easy and his didn't align so he spelled it out. No treadmill, no swimmimg, no cycling, no cross training and only gentle walking or pool walking for at least the next week. Exercises to be done twice a day.

    Morning & evening exercise routines.

400 metre acqua walk with core engaged.

Massage, lower back and glutes very tight.

Friday: was at a funeral all day/night so I took the day off completely, unfortunately my will power badly let me down and I ate a load of crap. It's funny where you pick up bits of optimism and positivity, at the afters there was a 96 year old woman giving out because she had to pay extra for more than a 3 year warranty on a cooker she had recently purchased!!

    Saturday

Am: 2 mile slow walk while trying to engage my core.
    Strength & stretching session

Pm: 2 mile walk, had to slow down more towards the end as I started to feel the onset of the sciatica kicking.

    Another Strength & Stretching session

    Sunday

Am: 3 mile walk, took me 54 mins to finish it.

20 mins stretching and core exercises

Pm: 2 mile slow walk, followed by another strength and stretching session

Thanks for all the advice and support on here and via pm, greatly appreciated.

Very frustrating but I'll see where this takes me.

I'd say a couple of weeks, Minimum.

I mean there's pig-headed and there's stubborn........ and then there's continually fcukin' up the rehab.

Sounds like my mrs. Trouble is she's usually right though. :)

That has to be one of the best things I've read in along time.

Look, you come across as a dogged stubborn f0cker when it comes to running (I mean that in a good way) and if you can be as dogged and stubborn about your rehab then I'm sure you'll see results.
The s+c stuff and the aquajogging can be very frustrating but it will pay off in the end. Hopefully you'll be back up and running before long, and stronger too.

The weather's sh1te anyway, your better off indoors!

    Good luck with the rehab.

I feel your frustration as I'm in a similar boat, Got a slap on the wrist from my Osteopath for 60 mins walking and have to curtail it to 30 mins.
Head up, we'll get there. I'd never have the patience for this walking long term!!

Bummer Tbl hang in there keep up the rehab and you’ll be back before long. Very frustrating :(

Been a couple of pretty miserable weeks since my last update.

Physio, osteopath, S&C, physical therapist, lumbar back brace, witch doctor and prayers to St Anthony, nothing seemed to be working. Had a bad set back just after my last update where I ended up hardly able to walk because of the pain and was totally dejected. Back to basics, with simple back extension exercises and knee rocks. I also had to cancel a ski trip with a friend of mine.

A work trip to Jupiter in Florida had me travelling for 20 hours to get there and it was very uncomfortable and to top it all off the group I was with were running every morning while I was struggling with baby back bridges!

Jupiter is a very affluent part of the US, they had a shop dedicated to selling "fashion apparel" for dogs and I passed a place selling ice cream for dogs!!

I've had to really focus on keeping it simple and things have been slowly improving. I was getting terrible sciatica down my arse, leg and big toe but now it mainly comes on in the evening and hopefully it'll disappear soon. The back feels good in the morning but as the days goes on it gets more uncomfortable but it's now getting later in the evening before it flares up.

I've now gotten the daily walk up to 2 miles, doing a range of exercises daily and today I managed to freestyle 10 lengths of the pool. My fitness is shot to **** and after 5 lengths I'd to stop for 5 seconds at the end of each length.

I'm going on a family skiing holiday on Saturday (no skiing for me) and the physio said I should be able to try to cycling when I get back.

It's been really frustrating but I'm hoping to target a return to gentle running on St Paddy's Day.

The only positive is that I haven't put on any more weight and come April I should have a back and arse like a mule.

I'm only dipping into training logs as it's depressing to see others running at the moment but good to see some decent PB's been achieved recently.

Bummer, TbL, but your patience will pay off. That's the thing with discs, they take their sweet time to heal and there's very little to be done about it. Can't remember if I passed on the advice I was given about returning to running ? It was to wait 1 month after being pain-free, then go back via a walk/jog programme.

You’ll get there C, it’s awful right now but you’re doing all the right things.

Um, not sure I should admit this but there’s dog ice cream in my freezer :D you can get it in SuperValu (someone else bought it for Woody I hasten to add!!)

I had horrific pain the first time, including sciatic type pain and loss of power on one side. All I could do was hobble to work and back with the help of some truly awesome drugs (I'd just started a new job and was high for the first few weeks, lol). Your physio is the best person to guide you here; in my case I only did exercise that didn't aggravate the pain so was limited to gentle walking, a few specific exercises (McKenzies), then Pilates and eventually walk/jog after having been pain-free for a month.

I got a fright initially when I read about you on about going on a skiing holiday. Didn't that play havok with you sometime previously? Anywho, glad the head is in order at least. You seem to have a plan and are not trying to rush things.
    Back trouble is a b1tch.
I remember suffering with a back problem in my pre running years. One time when it was bad I remember crying with both pain and frustration. T'was awful really.....

Good to hear you are being good on the food front too, all to easy to let it slip when injured, well done chief...

As an extra datapoint ... Mine was only sciatica, there was very little from the back itself. And I didn't do anything at all when it was giving trouble, everything seemed to upset it. On the positive side I definitely didn't wait a month without pain to run ;). But mine wasn't actually ruptured, just a "significant protrusion' ... and no drugs at all for me.

Pay no heed to the rest of us, listen to your physio and doctor!

Fingers crossed it doesn't take long.

If only it was my ar$e B, my chin also looks like a bag of wet cement.

I've had more up and downs that the price of Bitcoin over the last few weeks! Unfortunately it's been mainly downs though. I'd to stop everything except simple exercises and OAP walking and things were starting to improve but about 3 weeks ago I was reading the young lad a story on his bed and the most innocuous movement put the back out again.

Was very bad and I'd to stop even walking as it was flaring it up.

Been doing Pilates and that's helping and this week for the first time the back feels stronger and hopefully on the road to recovery.

Managed a 70 minute walk today and so far it hasn't aggravated it.

Depressing and frustrating and the longest stretch I've been out of running but the physio reckons I'll be back so I'll persevere for another few weeks.

I'm now working towards a plan to be back "running" on 1st May.

Ps: well done on your half PB.

    TbL
