    I'll elaborate.

    My current gaming PC has reached its peak.
    The motherboard socket is FM2 'something' and the graphics card I currently have is as good as the mobo will take apparently.

    Total War Three Kingdoms just got announced and I really want to get it. I have missed out on the Warhammer games and barely got to play Attila because my rig just cant handle it that well anymore - those games have always been fairly demanding and I can never keep up.

    So I want to start fresh and buy each component from scratch.

    I have already started saving since last week and I'm willing to put in overtime in work to earn extra.

    I'm aiming to have a budget of between 700-900 - I'll go past 1,000 if I have to but this is gonna be a long stretch of time.

    I went onto Newegg to browse different mobos, cpus, psus and there is just so much stuff to go through I have zero idea where to start.

    Would anyone have any pointers for someone potentially building a PC from scratch?

    Sorry for the overload of info.

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [Gaming/Video editing] (Games such as: Total War Warhammer 2 & Battlefront 2)

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [Hard drive/DVD Drive/Case/PSU/etc.] (If possible state brand and model of the parts to ensure compatibility)

    5. Do you need a monitor? [No]

    5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080] [No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.] No

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [No]

    8. How can you pay? [Visa or PayPal]

    9. When are you purchasing? [Plan on saving for about 2 months, earlier if possible - Late February/early March]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [Tramore, Co. Waterford]

    Thats a good place to assemble a system and check out compatibility issues before buying.

    Determine what exactly you want the PC to do, your budget, etc.
    For a newbie, finding a pre-assembled build list can help.

    Examples:

    With your budget, the "Budget" one would suit you best. Decent gaming on a 1080p screen.

    The vast majority of games run on only one or two cores. Very Very few use 4 or more cores. For that reason, get a CPU with fewer cores and good core speed, as opposed to one with a sqajillion slow cores that won't get used.

    There will be fanboys who argue this way or that, but if gaming is your thing, then go for intel, if all-round performance (games, video, photo editing, etc) then go AMD. That's really basic info, but generally holds true.
    If you want more storage, then add a HDD, but you absolutely want your OS, Steam/origin/epic/etc, and games installed on a SSD for faster loading.

    General tips?
    1 - I find air coolers to be far quieter than liquid coolers.
    2 - Get a bigger case than you need. Far easier to do installs, better for airflow, etc.
    3 - For gaming, the biggest proportion of your spend should go on the graphics.

    Don't buy from Newegg; most of their stuff ships from America and you'd get taxed.

    I'd aim for a Ryzen 5 1600 build. Not sure what graphics card though. Either a 1060 or RX 480. Probably the 3 or 4GB models but if you can stretch then the 8GB Rx 480 is what I would go for.
