Infared sender/receiver without rf2

*please move if in wrong place. Is it possible to use IR extender/reciever if the box I want to control has no rf2 output? I want to be able to control a set top box remotely. All info greatly appreciated.

I had a set of Powermid remote extenders before and they worked perfectly around the house
