Profit per cow, about 12% less.

One KPI that wasnt mentioned in that article was family time or time off away from the farm though.

One KPI that wasnt mentioned in that article was family time or time off away from the farm though.

Wasn't mentioned at the conference either, by presenters or audience members. The idea of comparing 8 OAD v 267 TAD as sample sizes is ****ing laughable as well.

There was a a few slides with standard deviations included that magically disappeared during the same presentation, I reckon given the raw data any statistician worth his salt would have lost one of the points that was skewing data.

I presume further articles may deal with those aspects, Carroll. Paud, i often like to see full raw data and do my own analysis, in various fields.
That seems to be a common trend, I find. Things get dropped in the synopsised presentation. Often, like for like comparisons are made difficult.

It may not be simply OAD V TAD. OAD at certain key points, at calving time, for first calvers and vulnerable animals, as outlined above.

Morning all. Question here. Have a young fellow coming to help me out-12/13. No farming exp but I'm going to use him for cleaning out cubicles and small houses and general tidy up work to start-so it's physical enough. Any ideas around hourly rate? I'm really not sure because of his age. My plan is to set one rate and once I get him up to speed to increase it then anyway.

You see so many opinions on this.
My eldest is 15 and going for an assistant position in the local pool, cleaning, sweeping some poolside duties. They pay €5/hr.

You would want to be very careful insurance wise. He is under the legal work age AFAIK and may not be insured if anything happened to him. Other than that 5/hour and if he works out you could see after that.

€5 seems very small to me. If you want to keep him interested I'd be giving a bit more. What can you buy with €5 realistically

    I would agree.
But you can hardly pay them the min adult wage either, or would you ??

I will be interested to see the actual rate my eldest gets, the €5/hr is from a friend that worked there two years ago.

But what she really really wants is the experience to put on her CV, she says the actual rate isn’t that important, she wants real stuff on her cv that shows she’s willing to work.
By the time she’s college age she wants to be able to teach swimming so she could give private lessons to supplement her costs.

€7.50/ hour ? If it's only a few hours at least they'd have something home with them.

Yea,Most insurance companies won't cover anyone under 16, You're gambling the farm really if he gets hurt.
They don't need to be badly hurt nowadays

Thanks all. He's getting6€ an hour. He is actually 15 my parents got it wrong. I'm going to do a minimum of 20€ as well so he will get at least that for coming up. I'm not sure how many hours I'll need him but it will be at least 3 every week. And I'll increase once I get him used to things and fencing etc.
I think if someone's doing the work right it's counter intuitive to pay lower as they will be gone or start resenting you for it which you don't want!! He has a good work ethic so far-and is careful which is important so we will see how we go!!!

FBD covered a named 15 year old for me a while ago, it was for the summer and he became 16 after only a few weeks.....it might be worth consulting your insurance

I see a program listed on TG4 tonight at ten to midnight, called "The ground we won".
About a group of farmers coming together to form a sports team, as a means if combating the stress and strains of their job.
    Could be worth a look.

Will we be rubbing blackberries to cows udders? Or will we be farming the blackberries?

Sister is a chemist. When she saw the project initially she was very sceptical but when he won it she said the judges would know their stuff and there must be something new in it

Heard today, his grandfather is very much into the herbs etc. Think he grew them commercially. Didn't lick it off a stone, as they say.
    Good school too.

There'd be a little bit of using "cures" back in one side of my family.
The different cures use different parts of plants and different plants.
There's a whole procedure that has to be observed when making them up.

Part of what you can say about it is that the person making the cures cannot take payment for them. That's the unwritten rule. (Although its written now). The whole thing is not supposed to be written really and certain people can only pass on the gift to certain people.

Kind of wondering did his grandfather know of "cures".

Sister was on a stand at young scientists yesterday, she said a stand cost the guts of 10k, then you pay for lighting, tables, etc extra. The crowd she's with had a stand split with another business. Anyone know how much it is into the exhibition?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,332 ✭✭✭✭Water John

    Ouch Whelan.
No 'cures' and stuff like that, Say My Name.

It’s interesting if you’ve any interest in science at all.

Oh how I would love to be that cat - chillaxed by the fire. Feckin freezing cold and I haven't been able to maintain a normal temperature over that last few days. One minute I'm boiling and the next shivering - some sort of a dirty dose of a virus. I woke up just after 3am this morning in a cold sweat and headed to the kitchen beside the range. Dosed off until 4.30 and woke up sweating. Headed back to bed and tossed and turned for the rest of the night.
