    Hello there

I believe someone is pretending to be me on a dating app. Or at least they have used one or two pictures of me.

I want to know is this illegal, seeing as said photos are from a social media account of mine, thus in the public domain already.
Would this be a criminal or legal matter if I wanted something done about it?
Ie if I went to a garda station to say someone is pretending to be would they take a statement from me and go after the person?

Or would they say sorry we can't do anything you need a solicitor and take a case against this person ?

Have you found the profile? Report it to the dating app and say this profile is impersonating you. I think if you know who is impersonating you, then a trip to a solicitor is probably a better course of action than reporting them to the Guards. Find out when the next FLAC meeting is happening locally and they might be able to advise.

Just because a photo is on social media does not mean it is in the public domain. This is annoying misconception when it comes to photos and art on the internet, just because something is posted publicly doesn't mean it's in the public domain. You or rather whoever took the photo owns the copyright and if you find your photo posted to a dating app from someone other than yourself you can contact the app and ask for it's removal on copyright grounds.

I've had my pics used on three fake POF and two fake Facebook profiles. I just reported them to the websites in question to be taken down. POF did it pretty much immediately, Facebook were a bit harder to deal with but I got there in the end.

Wouldn't even cross my mind to go to the Gardai over something so trivial. If they were actually pretending to be me for malicious reasons, maybe, but they were very obviously just catfishing. They didn't use my name or anything like that.
