Top marks for the sandbagging, C.
For what it's worth I'm in poor shape myself. I picked up a knee Injury a few weeks back to go with the Achilles problem. Physio has me on reverse one legged bridges and Bulgarian split squats. My longest run in two weeks has been 8k. Honestly I won't be hard to beat in Athenry if I go.

Monday: plan called for rest day. Had a S&C session that focussed on mobility as despite very little running last week I was very stiff and tight.

Tuesday: plan called for 6 miles easy, was still quite stiff and wasn't feeling the love so I called it a day after 5 easy miles around local roads.

Wednesday: called for a session, I was supposed to do this one last week but I was sick. I wasn't looking forward to this at all as it looked like a tough one.

    2 mile warm up, 6 min (3 min recovery) 3x2min(90 rec) 5 min (3 min ref) 4x1 min (75 rec) 4 min @ 6.30 pace 2 mile cd.

I made a total balls of this session, once I started it I got confused with the recoveries and I think Santa needs to deliver a new Garmin coz the paces seemed to be all over the place.

Got the warm up done around the pitches in Dangan and did the faster stuff along the compact path beside the river. Don't know what happened on the first rep but I did 5 minutes instead of 6, and I was so pissed off I nearly canned the rest off it. Decided to do 6 mins instead of the 5 for the next block and after the 3 minutes recovery I started on the 2 minute reps. I couldn't remember what the recovery was so I took a minute after each 2 min rep. After the 3 x 2 mins I then took 3 minutes recovery but I'm not sure I was supposed to do this. On the 4 x 1 min reps I only took 30 seconds recovery between each rep but after the set I again took 3 minutes recovery before starting the 4 minutes rep.

All my own fault and all over the place but at least I got 25 minutes running done at a decent clip.

If I turn up for Athenry it definitely won't be fast, you can put lipstick on a pig but that doesn't make it pretty :)

    5 mins @ 6.23
    3 x 2 mins @ 6.10, 6.11, 6.18
    6 mins @ 6.27
    4 x 1 min @ 5.59, 5.52, 6.04, 6.20
    4 mins @ 6.18

Hey TbL, I think its about time you moved into the 21st Century and learned(or got one of the kids to show you ):D how to program a session into the Garmin, makes everything so much easier, just wait for the beep and the watch tells you what to do!!!!:D:D

Probably had the chip pinned to his arse;)

Joking aside as I know you are disappointed with it, these things happen and I hope you understand that it is not a true reflection of where you are. I know you don't like to make excuses but some days, it's just not your day and you are in a much better position than the result suggests as you ran low 41 just a few weeks ago, you can't fluke a performance, not in running anyway so a good performance is always more accurate than a bad one.

Coming from someone who has similar history of racing "woes" and a tendency to get hugely pissed off after results, I've come to the conclusion over the last while that the common distance runner mentality of "no excuses" is the biggest crock of sh!te I've ever heard, it's to compare ourselves to robots or to be infallible to other influences which just isn't possible. You ain't going to nail everything and if you aren't feeling it, sometimes there's sweet FA you can do about it.

I had a terrible race in Newmarket a couple of weeks ago running a pace for 5k that I almost matched 2 weeks before for a half marathon. I just had one of those days where my body wasn't right going in due to circumstances leading up to the race and my head wasn't switched on. Like you, that performance wasn't indicative of where I am as the overwelming majority of my racing and training suggests otherwise.

I guess what I'm saying is don't let one race get in the way of the facts.

    Tnx El C,

I've done the "Fields" 5/6 times and never run sub 41 but I thought I was in with a shout this year.

    List of excuses:

    - I'd a dodgy stomach
    - I'd let the diet go to absolute crap for the last 2 weeks and the gut had reappeared
    - my entire right side from the waist down has seized up making it uncomfortable to run. Its been getting progressively worse and I think the root cause is a rock solid periformis/glute.
    - I did very little running over the last 2 weeks
    - I need S&C but it's a balance as it seems to set off niggles if I overdo it.
    - my head dropped lower than my gut and I wasn't prepared to get stuck in.
    - Party Marty & The Mayo Dolmen turned up.
    - unrealistic expectations of where I think I should be.

Tnx for taking time to post.

I'm hoping to run a 5k on New Year's Day and I've decided to just relax and if I run it in 22 mins, so be it.

    TbL

Hey, don't be blaming me and Marty.

    :D

As El C says, some days are just sh1te. (He might have put it more eloquently)
When I saw you displaying the belly at the start line I knew your head wasn't really in it. On the up side it was a novelty to start a race to the sound of shrieking women and crying children.

If you want to run incognito on new years day come to Westport for our resolution run.

The last few weeks have been very frustrating. I started getting niggles in my calfs, then in my ankles and they it spread to my hammys, quads and ITB. I get them worked on and they'd temporarily disappear only to quickly reappear. It wasn't stopping me running but it wasn't exactly comfortable either. I then started to get a fairly nasty nervy pain in my back/arse that would send flashes of pain all the way down my leg. Was very pissed off as I was finally getting back into it and all off very low mileage.

I had planned on doing the Resolution run on New Year's Day but when I got out of bed I could hardly straighten my back without pain so I gave it a miss. Tried some stretches and some short runs but it wasn't getting better so made a appointment with the physio. Looks like I'd aggravated a disc in my back and my glutes have also completely locked up. It's over a week since my first visit and the back has much improved but the glute is still not releasing. She had me sobbing today as needled it but it's still at me.

I'd to travel to London today which wasn't ideal as sitting for any extended period really sets it off. I haven't been in a plane in 3 weeks which must be a record for me and I nearly broke out in hives at the thought of it as I was boarding this afternoon! Hopefully this year I won't have much travel to do as I've changed roles in the company and the physio said all the travelling certainly isn't helping.

I'm staying in a really good hotel in the New Hampshire forest and I'm looking forward to just taking it easy this week and trying to get some easy running done every second day.

I've put all the weight I'd lost back on with interest so I need to tackle that too, I'm currently a real fat bastid even for a hobby jogger.

I'm not going to call out any target for 2018 as I just want to get back fit and out of elasticated pants!

I have ongoing back pain, it gets significantly worse when I put on a few pounds - it's kind of like a body alarm going off if the lbs creep up!!! (am currently foam rolling it now..... :( ). Anyway, hope you get it sorted soon. Surely it's time the running gods picked on someone else!!!

When my glute was sore I found it improved quicker if I did strength exercises like squats, particularly split squats where you have one foot on a chair and squat with the other leg.

Reading this bit was already thinking "it's a disc".

I remember the same thing about the plane journeys though it was not a major factor for myself ...

Hope it does not take too long to shift. I have a friend who regularly suffers from disc issues and her advice is that when it's niggling best leave it alone except for walking. When mine kicked off even swimming was upsetting it, but a month of no sport sorted it out (and added a few kilos of course ).

How’s the 14.6 stone coming on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,672 ✭✭✭ThebitterLemon

    Ha. :)

I've actually lost a few pounds in the last 2 weeks despite almost no running.

The words of the previous Man City footballer Mario Ballotelli spring to mind "why always me?"

Last week I was in the UK with work staying in a really nice hotel in Hampshire, Conde Nast have it as one of the UKs top 20 hotels.

The body seemed to be degrading piece by piece and I was getting a couple of different diagnoses in Galway, from glutes to hips to piriformis, so I decided to only run easy every second day, enjoy the hotel and see if it would settle down. Great spa with outdoor hot tub and I hit the treadmill twice over the week. The first time I'd to stop after 2k and roll my arse on a sliotar before starting again and getting 5k done. The next time I got 5k done in one go but I'd get random severe pain, tingling and pins and needles all down my right leg and into my big toe. The calf pain was particularly sore but when I got it massaged they couldn't find any knots!!

Sitting for any length of time also seem to set it off, physio thought it might be an aggravated piriformis coupled with weak glutes. Got loads of exercises and was told to grab, squeeze and lift up a handful of my arse periodically while running when the pain was kicking in.

Sounds daft and probably looked dafter, I certainly got some strange looks from the guys training on the GA pitch, an 50 year auld lad doing laps while grabbing his ass and grunting :) It did seem to help reduce the pain though!

Every morning I'd get up and there seemed to be a significant improvement but by the evening time I was very very sore. I ran on the roads early yesterday morning and it seemed ok but a couple of hours later it was worse than ever.

Spoke to an osteopath yesterday and he diagnosed a herniated disc. I passed the "power" test so it appears that it isn't extreme but I need to rehab it very carefully and it probably means weeks of no running.

I was supposed to go skiing with a friend of mine for the rest of the week in Austria and had hoped to kick off again on my return but I had to cancel the skiing and now I'm at a cross roads.

This log was supposed to chronicle my road to a sub 3 but it's turned into drama after drama, I'm no closer to that goal, indeed I've probably never been further away and this morning I'm questioning whether I've the motivation to continue. Last Year was a disaster running wise and this year has gotten off to a terrible start.

Feels like the straw that broke the camels back (no pun intended)!

I can empathise TbL, having been there not once but twice. Came out the other side both times and happy to share the rehab with you if that's in any way useful ? I'm a lot wiser now than I was after the first time and might save you making some of the mistakes I did! PM or email me if you like.

Bad news Conor, when you get back fit, why not run for fun again like you used to. Aim to do a few marathons in 4 hours 'with the lads'. You never know - the fun element might reappear.

It seems the last thing you need is the added pressure of competition for some arbitrary number.

Patience lad. Long term, or medium term anyway. Cos the short looks a bit fooked for ya.

Crap news Conor - but you will get healthy again and you'll be back running again. Get to work on the rehab and good luck with it, you'll be back moaning here in a few weeks no doubt and won't have been set back too much hopefully
