    On a UK train at the moment and I've spotted this on a platform? What is it? They've them in Ireland too I'm sure.

    Its a datum plate to record the height and position of the track with reference to the platform

    Nope, I think it's Bromley Cross, north of Bolton. I should have been paying more attention.
