Unable to update from 7.1.2

So Im currently using a Nexus 6p and when selecting the about phone option and request to update, it says im using the latest version. I know there are newer versions than 7.1.2. Anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Flash a Factory or OTA image. (Can be done without loss of data).

Bought it second hand unlocked! A friend whose on the same network with the same phone already has the 8.0.1 or whatever stage its at.

Unlocked doesnt mean unbranded. Just flash it yourself.
