And... just to highlight my point about the rugby forum... Munster V Ulster... after the game we get the same old heads from a 3rd province coming in and crapping all over the thread..not a mod to be seen....even though all their teams are playing this eve ..and they commented on threads.
Unadulterated crap...and it keeps on continuing...mods...category mods...be a little proactive and stop hiding behind your provincial colours

The obvious question here is, have you flagged posts and contacted the category mods to discuss your complaints?

You yourself said you were deliberately antagonising posters from the province Munster played last week so is this a bit of what goes around, comes around?

No, unfortunately, flagging posts is a waste of time...always has been.... anyone that posts in there will fill you in...
I react to antagonist posts and post in kind ,yes... unfortunately it's 'might is right" in there...and it's not changing anytime soon I believe.

Don't whinge about it here then. If you can't be arsed to report you have no basis to complain

You've already shown a complete misunderstanding by repeatedly dragging CMods into this without a clue as to their responsibilities. Any more digs at modding in the Rugby forum in this thread and I will ban you from this thread and/or forum

That's nonsense I've certainly reported osts in the past in Rugby including this week and they were auctioned

So you are contributing to a poor atmosphere on threads and see nothing wrong with It?

Report the posts and stop antagonising by replying in kind. The Mods aren't here to read every post in every thread.

You are beginning to sound like part of the problem, rather than the solution.

You know exactly the type of posts I'm talking about in there...as I have said before ..it's not a pleasant place when certain posters start their tricks ..and no proactive!!!!! mod decisions

Not at all surprised by some of the reaction in here....one time I did report certain posts I received no feedback...and posts were not sanctioned... mod actually warned me...so there is no incentive to report posts..

I didn't drag anyone into this...I am on mobile..it says there are 7 mods in the rugby forum...it makes no distinction between mods or cmods... perhaps a better layout would help...and not lead to misunderstanding yes?

Anyway, I'm done with this...take it on board...put it to admins... or ignore, same story for 3 years now...if it changes will and good... but I shan't hold my breath.

I don't know what to say then. I like your posts but I don't know of any system being able to work if some just discount the structures and say there's no point in following the guidelines/rules.

Say you were happy with the modding on the rugby forum but someone else refused to follow the rules, how would you see that panning out?

Funnily enough I have a life, I was at the match and I have more interesting things to be doing with my evening than moderating boards.ie.

If you don’t like it you know where to go.

Mods don’t have time to read all threads, reporting dodgy posts helps the forum.

    They’re not mind readers.

If I see a dodgy post in AH I’ll report it, if I didn’t I would have no right to complain about the forum.

What's currently going on in the abortion thread number 1000 (8th will not be repealed) is a decent example of how moderation here is lacking.

Unpopular poster that's arguing against the threads defacto position gets deeply offensive words put in their mouth and bated.
Most posters give up after this sort of thing when they see how being on the correct side or being a popular user wouldnt have this behaviour tolerated against them.

It's not a problem particular to that specific thread it's common across many forums on the site and all it does is reinforce circle-jerks and drive away users as well as just negatively impacting the view of the place and attitudes

Edit: Yeah difference is reinforced when you see how quick the thread about travellers in the cinema is locked (don't disagree with that being locked though)

How is that any different to what happened here in say 2007 or 2013. My memory tells me that it is no different.

2007 moderation was in general less severe, users could respond in kind

2013 it was definitely a problem (probably worse than now actually) but the site was just about to begin it's long slow decline at that stage

And it would have been locked in any year, including when the number of posts were on the increase.

For the record the rugby forum is perfectly welcoming, as numerous new posters over the years will attest to. I’ve been posting there for around 8 years (under a single username) and have made friends on the forum that I socialise with in the real world as well. I’ve met up with posters who live abroad when I’m at away games etc.

Unfortunately clear biases and demonstrably incorrect assertions will be called out. That upsets some of those who can’t handle their opinions being questioned. But anyone who wants to get on with people and take a positive and proactive part in the forum will have a predominantly positive experience.

There is a lot of negativity, griping, anger and bitterness on AH in recent years. This must surely be a deterrent to new posters joining the forum

AH has always been the sewer of Boards TBH. If I could remove/hide it from the the front page I would.

And yet you’ve posted more in AH than any other forum, Nate.

tCN is simply a dumping ground for topics that are simply too silly to be anywhere else, it's also a place to say stuff that is really ridiculous and not offend anyone.
There used to be the thread that had a competition to have the last word before boards shutdown for the 3AM backup and a booby prize of having the first post after the system was enabled after the backup. Silly stuff like that.

Yes, good fun stuff that was repeated here just last night with the last to post thread for 2017 ;)
The Cuckoo's Nest used to be something of a Dadaist haven, a place for artists and lunatics and intellectuals and fools to work with each other and express themselves via complicated nonsense and avant garde art that wouldn't have worked elsewhere on the site. It was fun for the sake of fun. Posts there didn't add to one's Post Count, and the Thanks function was never implemented there, because material/numerical rewards were not necessary.

It really was annihilated by the loss of some of its central characters over the years, for different reasons. I never really fit in to it myself. :o

The ONLY reason I mentioned it , which relates to the topic in hand in this thread, was that it was once a community, and IMHO, and as a regular contributor at a time going back about 7-9'years, a good forum for having a bit of fun. But due to moderation at that time, that community was killed off.

People tried to make something of that forum. Mod didn't like it. End of. It was a piss poor reflection on boards.ie as it showed zero respect for community.

It's exhibit A as far as my experience goes of boards in terms of what's wrong with the place- others will have different examples.

The cuckoos nest was always a desperately unfunny forum. Neckbeards quoting monty python at each other. Dadism seems to be used freely these days to describe gibbering surrealist nonsense. Like that Blindboy Boatclub idiot.

The part where the deeper problems with moderation on the site are ignored in favour of low hanging fruit, your an active mod on AH, if the posters that just thanked your post got offensive (bannable actually) words put in their mouth we all know mod action would be fast and harsh yet it's ok to do to other posters.

Your closing post is wrong because you assumed it would go down the "usual road".

Why not let the thread run and moderate it, instead of shutting down debate? Closing it preemptively is the lazy option tbh.

Just an anecdote, I asked my younger brother and his friends why they didn't really use boards and the answer came down to forums not really being on their radar. For them bulletin boards just aren't part of the net. You might look at them when they come up in search results for specific queries, but it just didn't occur to them to join them. I think this is quite different from a few years ago where forums were just a part of being online.
