You seem to think I was denying it wasn't offensive. If you read my post, you'll see that I was saying that I wasn't backing down in the slightest and that it is only offensive if you deem it as such.

But now this is becoming a conversation between two people instead of an open discussion, thus derailing the thread. If you wish to continue this, you can PM me :)

Afraid to be shown up in public.

And what do snarky comments from Admins/Mods achieve, in your opinion?

Your entire thread contribution has been snarky comments... so...

    Pot calling kettle?

No attempt at answering the question posed then... what would you better?

Boards started to die with the advent of snowflake eejits that are out to be offended, alt-right snowflake posters that are out to be offensive, the likes of the MCD lawsuit and the attempted lawsuits that we never hear about (why let people say what they want when all it takes is one trigger happy c*nt to take them to court), and when it started to become a commercialised venture with the Talk To forums.

And then the community itself changed from people who wanted to talk sh*t and have craic, to people who had agendas like the aforementioned snowflake posters.

If there is one term I hate it has to be "snowflake" - a catch all pejorative applied by baby boomers to a younger generation that they do not understand, nor do they face the same challenges that they do. Anyway it's not snowflakes, fascists, cucks or alt-whatever-you're-having that's causing the site to decline. It's an older userbase with less time to post and participate, and a site that is not set up in a way to appeal to younger people. That's the reality and the decline is terminal. The real question is how long the site has left and what will happen to the database when the site goes offline?

We can talk about relaxed moderation, but that liferaft has sailed, there is no saving this place - boards would need a total Reddit like overhaul to come back, but that won't happen because it would alienate the existing user base. That then leaves the site stuck between a cohort of existing users resistant to change and an inability to attract new users because it's format is outdated and hasn't changed. Trying to cater to both these groups is impossible (see exhibit A. The inept "responsive" site) as you can't have a fundamental change without having change.

The other measures like adjusting moderation policy are really only tinkering at the edges sand won't do anything to address the fundamental issues. In any case for every good initiative, you'll have another cack-handed measure, like the BS with the cafe that pisses more people off than the original issue that the new measure or policy was to solve.

Or maybe I've been on this site long enough to know that threads that become conversations between two posters on a topic unrelated to the thread at hand results in thread bans and mod warnings.

    I call that dog whistling.

It’s very much part of the topic. You were called out on the topic.

Now your dog whistling for the mods to rescue you from the mire you caught yourself in

Return the Feedback Forum to an actual feedback forum for a start.

And face the fact that Board's reputation for over-zealous heavy-handed Moderation is based on reality ........ and commit to doing something about that fact would be another step in the right direction.

Get rid of the Prison Forum (it's a joke!) and concentrate on improving the DRP instead.

Ah lord, we now have a comparison to Reddit... a populist cesspit based on 'upvotes.' Yeah.. no thanks.

I'd sooner boil my head in oil than visit that nonsense.

    I can't... actually..argue with that tbf.

Although the heavy handed modding I think is way overblown. Not in any of the forums that I frequent have I seen an issue tbh.

I like the Prison Forum... it's a guilty pleasure viewing of mine.

And therein lies the problem. Existing users do not want a Reddit like forum, yet this type of forum is extremely popular with the cohort that the site wants to attract.

The responsive site was an attempt to square that circle but failed miserably on both fronts. I don't know of anyone new or old who's had anything good to say about that piece of **** attempt of a site revamp.

Is snowflake a pejorative term, that serves no purpose but to offend?

It's a term that used to have some resonance but it's now deployed indiscriminately and as such has lost all meaning. And it's absolutely meant to be demeaning and undermining.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,813 ✭✭✭Noveight

I prefer the phrase "the eternally offended" to snowflake. It sits a bit nicer.

Feedback on that and the mess that was maid from the reorganisation of forums was given over and over and completely ignored.

I like reading the DRP Forum ......... and some of the reasons that Posters are Infracted and Banned for are pathetic, to put it mildly ......... two things always jump out at me, ie. the Infractions/Bans (no matter how petty the "reason" for the ban) are very very rarely over-turned and it seems to be consistently the same Mods (across multiple Forums) handing out the unnecessary Infractions/Bans.

The problems with the DRP Forum and heavy-handed Moderation was brought up several times in the old Feedback Forum ......... but those concerns were ignored and the Feedback Forum has been all but shut down.

The Prison Forum, in my opinion, is a circle jerk for unfunny Mods who seem to find themselves, and eachother, hilarious ........ and it serves no other purpose than facilitating the continuation of said jerking.

Just my opinion of course! :)

Whilst I don't necessarily agree with the infraction system, dems da rulz, and I find that most infractions contested in the DRP have contravened those rules. The majority easily that I've read have been open and shut. So, for consistency with the rules, they have to be upheld. If someone is "let off", that sets a precedent.

Honestly, some of the wide-eyed protestations in DRP are hilarious.

"I just can't see what I did to get this warning".
"You called another poster a thundering cuntbag. Upheld"
"I'm disappointed you see it that way. No wonder this site is dying"

I'm exaggerating a bit obviously but so many disputes are along those lines. :D

And presumably that was done because those in charge believed it was:
    A) enough to make the site modern looking, which would attract the aforementioned elusive Reddit user
    B) not different enough to alienate the old core userbase.

Of course the changes weren't half radical enough to win over new users, but a pointless additional layer of complexity for existing users. Furthermore, the lack of meaningful consultation on the changes with existing users was a bit of a kick in the face from those that run the site.

Not to mention that the new site was a half finished, seemingly untested, crock of steaming ****.

The Prison forum is a bizarre one, wannabe comedians that just string posters along with painfully unfunny attempts at humour. Even when posters are conducting themselves in a polite manner.

If you think forums like after hours doesn't have a system catered to "upvotes" you'd be very wrong.

That's what the "thanks" button is for

    Uh... no.

Reddit upvotes see populist or 'well thought out' (That's subjective but i digress) posts rise to the top.

I'm not gone on the Thanks either it wrecks 90 per cent of AH threads tbh.

But at least it doesnt make a topic an utter unreadable pile of muck like Reddit.

I don't get it at all and have no intention of ever trying.

I thought thanks button was for giving actual thanks, for, when you were grateful for their comments and when you thought they had given an acceptable level of contribution to the conversation as to have earned some thanks.

Sorry, no the thanks button works on the very same principle as a facebook like - it even uses the same naff as **** thumbs up symbol.

I know, as I said I'm not a fan. I'm just a fan of linear conversation rather than gobbledygook upvotes determining the point of conversation
