He got his white belt in January 2016 so accounting for his herniated disc, training for his fight, competing in reality TV shows and writing comic books i'd say he must be at it as much as possible anyway. He's obviously dedicated to it. I do believe he will have another UFC fight considering how much money he made them in his first fight, the next one will make them less than that but still more than most other ppv's they do these days.

What do you mean he got his white belt

I'm also calling it now Tony will have to defend the interim against the khabib/fergson winner before mcnugget fights again.

Sorry I meant he went from no Gi to Gi in January 2016 (as far as I know anyway). I don't know why I phrased it that way?! Too busy in work at the time maybe.. :o

Which would be utterly ridiculous. The #1 contender having to defend his #1 contender spot before he gets a shot at the title. After 10 wins in a row.

I think you are exaggerating the "day in day out" part. He is training 5 years. And it's been 3 years since he announced he signed to the UFC. Somebody training day in day out m, full time. Should be blue in under a year.

Don't get me wrong. I'm glad he's still plugging away. But the fact he is only a blue belt now highlights how far removed he was (or is) from full time training. Talk of a second fight is laughable.

Jon Jones in is a blue belt. This he was only promoted before his last fight in the UFC

All roads lead to Conor for ya?

It’s more likely GSP wants no part of MW anymore and will go back down to WW/ just take money fights.

The only reason he took Bisping was because it was the easiest fight available

Stipe v ngannou in the final stages of being confirmed for ufc 220 in boston this coming january

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,685 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Not really. A lot of ibjjf focused bjj schools don't promote if you don't train to n the gi, until recently enough he didn't train regularly in the gi, same as Jones and others, they did plenty of bjj in training but all no gi stuff. It's entirely possible to train for a decade and Never get a promotion because you're not training for go and your coach has that weird mentality that only gi classes for ibjjf rules count for promotions.
Well, I did follow up with "There's a chance that Punk is only ranking now because he hasn't been in the gi in 3 years". I figure you were already replying when I posted it.

But that said, I'm pretty sure that BJJ at RoufusSports is done in the gi so doesn't apply. His coach mentioned in interviews, that Punk was training in the gi for his fight with mickey gall. He said he was training 3 times a week - assume that was BJJ only.

As far as I know he started in the gi, not the other way around.
Here he is with Rener in 2012. Obviously he is a novice, but it isn't his first day either. There were other appearances before he announced he had signed with the UFC.

I understand he was still in the WWE at that stage. I'm just pointing out even allowing for injuries/surgeries, it's a long time to get to blue when training as much as he should have been. There's no shame in that, he's nearly 40 afterall - but he needs to resign himself to the fact he's a 40 year old hobbiest.

Meh, I should probably also add (before somebody brings up Mighty Mouse/Jon Jones being white and blue belts).
Jones has an extensive wrestling background. Who won national state and national championships. Training pro level MMA for a decade. With virtually no time in the gi.

CM Punk's only relevant martial arts background is BJJ. His pro MMA training included training in the gi.

There's a huge difference there. As Im sure you are aware.
By the same logic, Khabib and Mighty Mouse are BJJ white belts. And Tony is unranked in the gi...All technically true, but completely ridiculous.

Confirmed now. Cormier-Oezdemir moved down to co-main event. This will sell more than 219

It's as close to a certainty as you can get in MMA. He is going to sleep early

No it isn't! If anyone can beat Ngannou it's Stipe.

Many power punchers tend not to have great gas tanks. If Stipe could bring him past the the second round I feel, the odds starting to turn in his favour.

Easier said then done of course , but it will be interesting if he can survive the first two rounds of death.

Stipe hasnt a prayer against that freak of nature, reem had him on queer street Big Fran will decapitate him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,834 ✭✭✭Useful.Idiot

Lads, as well all know, MMA math is not to be counted upon. Reem was very aggressive and thought he could trade with Ngannou which was a silly game-plan. Stipe has of course a big task ahead of him but if he can wear down Fra against the fence or take him down and pummel him then the gulf in technical skill will then become apparent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,405 ✭✭✭Lukker-

Stipe has been dropped in his last 2 fights. I don't really think you get the opportunity to recover against someone like N'Gannou. That said technically I think Stipe is the better boxer, so at this weight class it's whoever connects cleanly first.

God knows what condition N'Gannou will be in after another couple of months being experimented on by UFC scientists in the underground lab tho

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 7,269 ✭✭✭Gamebred

Hasnt long, the fight is in 40 odd days, people are presuming Fran cant wrestle or has cardio issues zero evidence of either from what I've seen from him.

Overeem got him in the cluinch against the fence, ngannu literally just pushed him away. No one in the current roster troubles him

Stipe is an absolute beast, I don't think Fran is gonna walk through him (although he very could do) but I do suspect and hope he (Fran) walks away with the gold.

Poor Stipe fighting for a better contract all this time and this is the fight he has to prove his worth.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,795 ✭✭✭dulux99

Stipe is crafty, exeprienced and has a good gas tank. He went 5 rds with JDS when JDS was juiced to the tits and the two of them swung for the fences all night. He's got excellent fundamentals and especially good boxing. Overeem charged at Ngannou like a bull (out of fear I suspect) and over extended especially in the final exchange. I don't think Stipe will make those mistakes. It wasn't that long ago that Curtis Blaydes lasted two full rounds with Ngannou before the ref called it between the 2nd and 3rd.

From the above it sounds like I fancy Stipe - gun to my head I probably still would go with Ngannou. But I certainly don't think he's a certainty. And for the record I stated on here that I thought Ngannou was an absolute cert vs Overeem.

It's a cracker of a fight. Best HW matchup since Cain vs JDS 1.

    So GSP has MW-itis?

Looks like the the doctors orders is to cut weight and go back down to 170. No one really expected him to defend if he won the belt so it's not really a shock.

What was a blatant lie though was Danaher saying he was 190 in the cage vs. Bisping. I mean, that's what he weighed when fighting at WW, his body was totally different and a good deal bigger.

Helwani saying GSP has vacated after his diagnosis. Whitaker-Rockhold will be for the full belt.

He's sick at the thought of having to fight any of the top 5

Even though I thought Bisping could take him he never was going to defend it if he won.

Fiar play to GSP for making the decision so quickly and not holding up the division. If only other fights could do the same

He made that decision before he even won the belt.

As for mcnugget, he has dreams of becoming the first fighter ever to be stripped in two divisions

He said it pretty much in the ring he was too heavy, he was too small, it was obvious he was going to drop down, but it puts him in for a title shot at 170 now

    Woodley will be laughing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,529 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

Bisping came out with this the week before he fought GSP and it sounds like he’s spot on:
“He ain’t going to fight Whittaker. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the contract or not. I believe it is in the contract. But, all he’s got to do is say, ‘I don’t fancy that. If you want me to fight again and sell a lot of pay-per-views, it’s got to be someone else.’

“And the UFC would fold. I would imagine.

“He wants to beat me and go down and beat Tyron, then beat McGregor and then retire. He wants to beat all three and the UFC probably wants that to happen.“

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,134 ✭✭✭dashoonage

Woodley is gonna wreck that plan.

I just read this interview with Gunnar Nelson talking about letting his brain heal up after the Ponziinibbio fight. Very smart thinking and I wish more fighters would have this mindset.
