If you have a Google account it will automatically backup your sms. When you log into your new device with your Google account your sms's will be visible if you go to the gmail app and hit the 3 horizontal bars on the top left and scroll down to the SMS tab. I have been able to search back as far as 2012.
    Hope this helps.

SMS backup and restore. Been using it for years. You can link it to your Dropbox/Google drive too which is handy so it makes it easier to transfer the backups from one device to another.

Wow, I never new that backup existed in Google! Checked my Gmail this morning and all my SMSs for both my personal and work phones are there!
I had a Nexus 4 but currently use one of the Vodafone models and a Motorola so I don't think it's specific to Pixel or Nexus phones.

P.S. SMSbackup is a pretty nifty app though

Not on my Pixel it doesn't, no SMS tab to be seen anywhere. Are you sure you don't have SMSBackup+ installed and have forgotten about it?

Ive been using a Htc One M8 and now a Samsung A5 2017. My gmail account on my phone and laptop has an SMS folder...times dates and names. I dont have SMS backup+

Well, what can I say, mine doesn't and never has either on my Nexus 5 or my Pixel. What app are you using to send SMS messages? If not the standard Android Messages app, could it be that that's saving them in Gmail? I've done a Google search on saving SMS to Gmail and every single one of the hits refers to using an app to perform this function.

How old are the newest SMS messages in the Gmail SMS folder?
I also have the folder but it was created when I copied over texts using SMS Backup.

Ok I got the texts copied over. But do anyone have any ideas on copying favourites, bookmarks?
Didn't sign into chrome saving them, so if I sign in now can I lose all bookmarks saved already to no profile?
    Suggestions please?
