This is slighty OT (and it might turn into a rant :o) but I'm just wondering for those of you with young kids/minors how you manage to fit it all in and and how much is reasonable to expect of OH.

Before DCM i was only running 3 x per week and it wasn't really an issue. DCM was a one-off (ahem :p) which OH was totally in support of and in fairness he was great taking up some slack in the childcare department for the duration of that training plan. However now it's done and I constantly feel guilty about training. I really want to commit to s&c however i still want to run 3/4 times per week so am i asking too much or how do the rest of you balance everything.

To give an example this week

Monday: oldest had scouts so i went to the gym while he was there (no point driving home to turn around and go back to pick). OH at home with younger pair. I did bedtime routine when i got home.

Tues: oldest had karate so i did a 35 minute run and watched 25 mins of his class (he likes one of us there to see a bit). Again OH at home with younger pair. I was home in time for OH to go to his circuits class. I did bedtime routine.

Wed: My day off, i paid the childerminder to keep the toddler for 2 hours from 9-11am so i got to the gym without impacting OH or school going kids. I did after school homework etc and bedtime routine.

Thurs: I stayed in work late and went straight to track for session, I wasn't home til 8:15, OH did bedtime routine but i was home in time to say good night to 2 kids, toddler already gone to bed.

So then last night, i mentioned i'd be going to the gym today after work but that I'd be home by 6pm and he gives me grief cos i've done some form of training EVERY DAY this week. He's not wrong, but i try to do it with minimal impact on the family. But now all I feel is guilty

OH has an early start to work every morning so he doesn't see the kids in the morning at all, i do all the morning routine before getting myself to work. I can't help feeling i do my share (and then some).

If only i could just quit the day job and go pro :pac:

Hi Sean just confirming that the baggage area will be at the start line so you can drop off/pick up bags there.

That's great to know. I hope I'll be able to struggle up the hill :D

It's shocking when life gets in the way of the important stuff like running.

I don't have young children so am not as stuck timewise like most of you here but even so I do plan my runs around life . My other half doesn't drive so I'm her chauffer, if i'm going to be anywhere waiting more than an hour on her I will go prepared for a run. Running at lunchtime at work is also something to think about.

To be fair on partners, running is a very time consuming hobby which can have an impact on their free time too.

Now the good news by the time you're in you 50's your partner will probably be only too happy to see you heading out on yet another run.

Plenty of miles in the legs post marathon not a bother to you.....a coffee and cake back in the club before tackling the hill will boost the energy!

Thank you for reminding me about lunch time. I need to look into it. There is a shower (yes singular for 120 employees ) and I'm not sure if it works or not but i'll investigate. I seem to spend my lunchtimes running errands but I'm sure with better organisation i could free up a couple of them and it'd be a way to get a few miles in and in daylight too which would be a bonus :)

Yeah I'm looking forward to the cake but I think I'll need some extra layers of clothing first! To celebrate the 3 in a row and my name on here I'll be running in the Dublin jersey tomorrow. I think that's why Roland Deschaine has bottled making an appearance :D

I'm not really a Christmas-y person, but I have a red running top so plan to wear that as a sort of a semi-Christmas theme. You might not see it under the layers of running jackets though! I'm not sure how brave I'll be to discard them before the start. We'll see if our friendly neighbourhood elf comes through on his promise for good weather first.

And I apologise in advance if I don't recognise anyone I've already met. I've a notoriously bad memory for faces :(

Cloudy light winds and 7c not going to get much better than that.

Goodies delivered by Brogans Bakers for the finish line and entries almost full.....time to get the Bells Jingling!

I think you are doing great to fit your runs in around the kids classes or whatever and I do think you are doing your share by the sounds of that. I always feel guilty too. I tend to do 4 runs a week, two at night generally when the kids are in bed though I don’t necessarily so the bedtime routine. I do everything else and getting everything ready for the morning and help dressing for bed etc but DH would read the story and put them to bed. Wednesday morning I have off so I always run then and Saturday morning is either Parkrun or long runs. I work Sundays so DH has the kids Saturday morn and all day Sunday - but then I have them all week. Just means we don’t have a family day as such.

That’s the only reason I said no more marathons after Dublin but of course I’d love to have another bash at Cork and of course then do Dublin again if I train for Cork :D

If you asked me wife did I do any exercise this week she would probably say no but I've ran 39k and cycled 30k so far. I plan my running so it doesn't effect my wife and kids.

I work a 3 day week so does my wife so we don't have childcare. But if I worked 5 days it would make little difference to my training.

    This week

Every Monday I drop the kids to School and play Golf with my retired father , running is secondary to every other hobby but I always think if I can't find an hour a day to run if I want then things are bad.

Tuesday dropped kids to school and go for an hours run 10k

Wednesday drove half way to work parked the car and ran the rest of the way to work , ran back to the car in the evening. 2 x 7km runs

Thursday cycled to work , at lunchtime put on running gear to go for a lunchtime 5km but it was raining so I skipped it.

Friday same as Wednesday 2 x 7km runs

Saturday I will get up early probably do 3k warm up then do parkrun kids swimming is at 10.30 i'll have there bags packed tonight and collect them straight after run .

Sunday I do whatever don't mention running or plan a run see how the land lies if we are doing nothing and kids are relaxing watching a film i might nip out midday but generally i'll head out after I put them to bed.

Try make it part of your commute , i'm aware things are harder for women (running late at night can be daunting for women and also showering issues with drying hair and what not , but if you can get a routine its worth it).

I don' t mention running at all I just organise myself have a little bag ready throw it in the car and drive to work park halfway or whatever, no need to tell the wife or even complain if/when i'm tired later. And be flexible I never feel guilty about missing a run its supposed to be fun if it starts to become a chore you'll not stick that long term.

I found it hard going not sure what was up legs felt heavy and tired and the hills so many hills that lasted a long time LOL or at least it felt like I was climbing mountains :P
