Competition word max limit

The Sunday Business Post competition has a 5,000 word max. One of my stories is 1,380. Would this be too short to be considered?

Nope.

If it doesn't state a minimum, there is none.

Did you read last year's winner? It was phenomenal.

I think thats terrible writing? Its all over the place.

Squashed imagery and stop start. No flow at all.

It's certainly a very strong story, well written, the international/racial aspect is very current. I don't like it though. The author has deliberately stripped all the emotion out of it, it's like a shell, you have to guess what's going on inside. I feel alienated by it, don't really care when the extraction happens. I can see why it won, all the same.
Going back to the original question, the word count here is 2,300.

I liked it but I wouldn't say it was brilliant. It did wander a bit but I didn't find it a piece that I would say 'Wow, that was brilliant.'

Maximum is maximum - not a target.

Also look at who are the judges in a particular year, if you can - helps!
