Crooked Jack - are you me?

Check out your local library - they have a selection of books on tape, CD or mp3 player, plus if they don't have what you want, you can ask them to get it.
Ulysses is difficult to read but very easy to listen to.

When I checked your location it seemed that I possibly might be.
But then you specified you were the sheriff. So, probably not.

I have one for Stephen King under the dome and it's annoying me a bit, I'd read it far faster than they would
listen to German ones to improve listening comp, there's one guy who does an amazing job with Agatha Christie, and a full cast with some sound effects for journey to the centre of the earth, that one is good

What German ones can you recommend? Just back from Germany and was a bit annoyed my German isn't as good as it could be. I've got a 40 minute commute each way so it'd be a good way to kill the time.

Last time I wasn't arsed about buying the book itself, I downloaded the audiobook of The Game by Neill Strauss - the book about the pick-up artist community in the USA. Surprisingly enjoyable listen, although his hissing, lispy voice was a little annoying.

I haven't listened to the Fry version, but from looking into which is better, many have said Dale's is better for the fact that he narrates the characters using different voices.

Fry does that as well, but to each his own. Here's a Youtube clip with Dale reading a bit first (about 7 mins), then Fry reading the same bit, so you can see which you prefer.

Big big spoiler warning - I'm vaguely assuming you've read the books, but the extracts are taken from from the very end of the last book, giving away everything. If you haven't read the books, don't listen to this!

I got into audiobooks about a year ago. I absolutely love them. Perfect for commuting. I downloaded the top 100 sci-fi books of all time as I reckoned I would never get around to reading them. As they come from many sources I have listened to a fair array of how they are done. I don't think I really have a preference but the worst was book read by Ray Bradbury. He was obviously not well by the time he recorded it and difficult to understand.

I have an sound a sleep pillow so I often listen to the books going to sleep. If I am doing something mind numbing I even listen to them in work.

    what's that?

A pillow with a speaker in. You can listen to something and it won't bother other people in the bed.

What's the best app to listen to audiobooks? Say from the play store? I've a Samsung phone.

I used to have books with tapes like Treasure Island, A Tale of Two Cities, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, to name but a few

    Depends where you get them.

I use both Audible and Borrowbox.

Good few available on YouTube too

    Audible is very good.

I just use audiobooks for the non-fiction genres. Fiction is more enjoyable read.

Sadly they don't do many tree audiobooks so I don't do a lot of listening, but my oh loves them. I also download them for the boy and convert them to acc so I can put them in his Nintendo dsi for him to listen to.

I got this one for my oh as it has a "folders" option, and she finds it very easy to use, Pi music player

Right now I'm listening to the new Philip Pullman book, la Belle Sauvage, which is the prequel to his His Dark Materials trilogy. The book is narrated by Michael Sheen and it's utterly wonderful. I love listening to narrators when you can tell just how much they like what they're reading.

Public libraries are a great source of audiobooks.

    Visit your local public library

Join your local public library ( Proof of ID & address usually required )

Yea get some through the public library here but selection v limited really.

So I joined an American library ;) that has a vast collection, and even allows me to recommend new acquisitions, but i return the books as soon as I have downloaded them, as I'm good like that and don't want to deprive an American of the audiobook.

Oh had just finished disk francis's collection of about 42 audiobooks and really enjoyed them.

I've listened to a few autobiographies I've found on YouTube when I've not been able to sleep.

    Frank Skinner reading Ozzy's.

Bush reading his own but keep falling asleep with that one (worth trying if you have insomnia).

All the time. I'm a fast reader and have always read but I've run out of time/interest in reading books so let the audio book do the work now.
Nothing highbrow. Love the Lee child and Michael Connolly books. Brilliant to listen to walking the pooch.

I listened to quite a few audiobooks when I was driving long distances across Australia a few years back - found them great for keeping my attention, and not letting my mind wander while driving outback roads. that being said, a lot has to do with the person narrating the book.

Can't imagine listening to them in any other situation though - I prefer to read, and can do so far quicker than any audiobook.

I listen to Audiobooks most days when driving at work or when walking. In tue jeep I use the audio in jack to enjoy full sound.

    Sci-fi mostly.

RC Bray is an excellent narrator.

I started listening to them on my commute and would get them in my very limited section in the library.

Since my library have gone online, the possibilities are endless, I find them great for cleaning the house! Wireless earphones, and for listening to whilst driving, obviously with out the Ear phones!

I usually listen to them while walking a particular hillwalk with my dog. I find it a pleasant combination. The following stand out in my memory from the last year or two for being pretty good.

    Mr Mercedes by Stephen King

Brain Wave by Poul Anderson: Every creature gains hugely increased intelligence.

Listening to The Long Earth series by Pratchett and Baxter: Most people gain access to a technology letting you step into parallel worlds.

    Some of the ASoIaF books

Also listened to the Daughter of the Regals by Stephen Donaldson. It was okayish. Think he went downhill sharply after the 80s. Also some Witcher story I don't really remember.

My kids all had a tape recorder and audiobooks and it worked well. Even my son who is not a reader has listened to an amount of books. This was extremely good for his vocabulary and listening skills and he wouldn't have got those skills so well as he doesn't like reading books. Even now I play childrens classic audiobooks on cd in the car, kids won't read Peter pan or the jungle book etc but they're lovely to listen to. I would recommend anyone with children to give kids audiobooks, they develop their Language skills without the child even realising it.
I still have all the tapes, can't bear to throw them out even though they are ancient technology...I suppose there's nowhere that would take them?

I drive for a living and I would love to find a good 'source' of audio books. I looked into it a few years ago and if I remember they were quite expensive!?
Finding this thread has put the want on me again.
I love listening to radio documentaries so I know I'm a prime target for audio books :)
Library, American Library, downloading etc as mentioned above.. PLEASE EXPLAIN. Thank You.

Never used it but Audible is very popular and I think it's a monthly sub rather than paying for each individual thing.
